Community Highlights: Meet Chelsea Garner of House of Js Coffee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Garner.

Hi Chelsea, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My husband and I had dreamed for 10 years of owning a local coffee shop, but never thought that dream could become a reality until September 2022. At that point, an opportunity presented itself to us to purchase House of Js Coffee in our Arvada community. We decided to put our love of coffee and expertise of entrepreneurship together and go for it! It’s been a wild and fun ride! Lots of learning and lots of marketing! We have worked hard to make House of Js the neighborhood hot spot where everyone walks in and instantly feels welcome, loved, seen, heard, and valued. We want this to be the neighborhood coffee shop where people choose to gather with friends, business partners, or family and enjoy the best tasting coffee available.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Great question! We own other businesses but not ones with a brick and mortar shop or employees! So that was very different to get used to. When you own an actual physical location, that comes with typical issues like a faucet breaking or a coffee machine not working, which can be a bit stressful for a brief second. Also finding a keeping incredible staff has been my top priority since the moment we purchased House of Js. Our staff become an extension of our family so when they graduate college or leave for a full time job, it’s so bittersweet! All in all, it’s been an incredibly fun journey and experience!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
House of Js Coffee is a local, neighborhood “mom and pop” coffee shop located in North West
Denver in the suburb of Arvada. We are a craft coffee shop that serves incredible coffee beans, locally
roasted right here in Denver and we specialize in coffee drinks like lattes, cappuccinos, cortados, americanos, etc. We also offer the finest pastries freshly baked by a local Denver baker.

Our customers are diverse, unique and special in their own ways! They enjoy exceptional coffee and love to support our local establishment instead of the chain coffee shops. Our misson is to have a space where anyone with any
background and lifestyle can come experience feeling known, loved, be seen, heard, and feel
valued. We desire for our friends, neighbors, and customers to have an experience where they
can enjoy the best tasting espresso drinks while feeling like they matter to our staff and we are
all family. We want our people to come in and feel like they have entered their local
neighborhood hang out and they can’t imagine going anywhere else.

My team of unbelievable employees is a group of super fun, quirky, intelligent and witty
individuals who value connect, community and relationship. They learn the names of our
customers, neighbors, and friends and gather bits and pieces about the their lives to connect
with them on a more personal level and we make it a priority to follow up next time they come
in the shop on life events or happenings that they have previously shared with us.
Our team also truly loves and enjoys being baristas and learning the craft of steaming milk
properly and practicing beautiful and unique latte art in order to bring extra joy to our customer
experience.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I have been a people person my entire life. I have always thrived on being around people, talking with and laughing with people. My cup overflows when I’m in community with others, which is why owning a coffee shop is my absolute passion project! It’s such a joy.
