Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrell Adolph.
Hi Darrell, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my agency in October of 2000 with a captive insurance carrier. Then in 2008 after 8 years there I decided to go independent to take advantage of the many carrier options that would benefit my clients. Going independent meant we could provide even better protection for our clients and their assets and while offering better rates to save them money over the long run. Starting over was difficult but proved to be the best choice now looking back. The agency has continued to grow and help more clients each year. By adding more personal and commercial carriers the agency has doubled in size over the last 5 years twice, while writing business in 23 states. Having many insurance carriers on both the personal and commercial side allows us to provide our clients with the most options to fit and cover all their needs. We just celebrated 25 years in business last October and are looking forward to more continued growth in the future.
Through the years of helping so many clients and doing what was best for them, we’ve found that always being transparent and educating our clients/prospects builds the trust that you need. By explaining coverage, and how their policies work, we can help keep clients stay out of bad situations. For example, like wanting to switch to another carrier only to save a few hundred dollars a year in premium, only to find out they’ll have to pay tens of thousands more when they file a claim or even may need to buy their own roof.
I’ve always enjoyed helping others and I can truly say that I love what I do! I look forward to going to the office every day and facing the new challenges that come with each new day. I also enjoy mentoring other agents because it is very rewarding when I can help someone else stay positive and help direct them through the challenges of owning an insurance agency. In my free time I also like running and have completed 3 marathons and over 30 half marathons. Running is that thing that allows me to relax and turn my mind off and just run. We all need to find that thing that gives us that reality break in our lives, and mine is running.
In the beginning, I was just trying to make ends meet. Now, my vision has expanded. With thousands of clients to serve, a growing staff to lead, and the next generation of agents on the rise, it’s become about how much I can give back.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In the beginning, there’s a lot of pressure to write new business when starting your agency and one of my biggest struggles in the beginning was thinking that I had to know everything, and I didn’t need to. But it would take hours and sometimes days to dig through the product manuals to try to find the answers I was looking for. Now, I still don’t know everything, but I now know how to get the answers in a timely fashion and get them back to the client quickly.
Refusing to quit or give up on my agency goals and dreams due to carrier management or limitations, rate increases and the always changing insurance marketplace was challenging. But overcoming these challenges provides valuable experience to guide our agency forward.
