Today, we’d like to introduce you to David Starcevich.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Copper Cup Coffee Company started as a quippy business idea between Ari and myself. The playful alliteration of the name. Not to mention the idea of a community-centered business that made kids, family, and relationships the focus. At that time, Ari was a stay-at-home mom with a passion for kids, moms, and especially — coffee. I was a chemical engineer for large industries in the early stages of my relationship with coffee.
With a little alcohol-induced courage and an undeserved sense of invincibility, we put the wheels in motion to bring the Copper Cup to life. We started with a one-pound roaster in the garage, long midnight hours, and even longer days selling coffee at local markets. When our concept was proven out, we scaled up to a full coffee roastery and coffee shop. We now reside on 631 S Ash Street in Casper, WY and we commit every single day to opening our doors for the community to join us over a cup of coffee.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There is no such thing as a smooth road. There are continual obstacles in your path. Some you can spot and carefully navigate around. Others you run into full speed, blindly, like a child who has finally grown to the exact height of the kitchen table. But you have no choice but to work through each of them as they come and learn from them the best you can. The most recent struggle we are working through is managing cash flow during a period of rapid growth.
Every dollar we take in is currently being invested into a bigger tomorrow which is a problem I’m not sure a lot of people realize exists. It requires a lot of planning and attention to make sure those dollars are going to the correct places because there is such a small margin for error. So far, we have done well managing this growth, but we always try to keep an eye out for the next pitfall.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Copper Cup Coffee Company is known for two things: 1. our commitment to the community and 2. giving our community a quality of coffee that sets us apart from everyone else. We take great pride in the attention to detail we afford every step of the coffee process. Each bean we bring in is tested across an array of roast profiles and optimized to bring out the character of each unique bean and its origin.
Only the best coffee in the world is sent to our customers. We have a full-scale cafe where each detail of preparing the perfect coffee is monitored. We only have the best equipment in our bar and we train our baristas to use it to the highest effect. We drill down into the details of every cup. The result is a superior coffee that pairs with our homemade liege waffles served hot and glistening with caramelized sugars.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
There’s not much unknown about our family. We literally live in the coffee shop amongst our customers. Anyone who comes through our doors gets the full Starcevich experience — David, Ari, and the Starcevich’s three. From time to time even an escaped dog. Authenticity is the root of our ethos. We serve our community unapologetically as we are, and we see every customer as a guest in our home.
