Today we’d like to introduce you to Donnie Nielsen.
Hi Donnie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey into being a barber started freshman year of high school. I had a genuine interest in barbering and a desire to build something of my own. Over time, I put in the work to improve my skills, learn from my experiences, and develop my own style. What started as an interest grew into something I really cared about and wanted to turn into a career. Today, I’m focused on continuing to grow as a barber, building strong relationships with my clients, and creating an experience that keeps people coming back. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, but I’m also still hungry to learn, improve, and take my business to the next level. My goal is to continue building my name and creating something I can be proud of for years to come.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges I faced was losing my previous manager, who passed away back in 2023. She was the one who got me out of a corporate chain barbershop and into a shop that I had always wanted to be apart of. Not long after that, the business right next door to the barbershop caught fire. I got a call at about 2 a.m. about the news of the fire and flew down to the barbershop to try and salvage whatever I could. During the fire mitigation process I ended up losing most of my barbering equipment. It was terrible parting ways with some of my favorite tools, as well as losing some of my artwork and decor that is near impossible to replace. Losing someone who had been an important part of my career while also losing the tools I needed to work was extremely difficult.
At the time, it felt like everything was happening at once, but it also pushed me to take a leap and start my own business. What started as a very difficult situation ended up giving me the motivation to become more independent and build something of my own. It taught me to keep moving forward even when things don’t go as planned.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Donnie B. Goods is a barbershop built on tradition, hard work, and a commitment to providing quality cuts and a great experience for every client. I would say I specialize in doing traditional haircuts. I don’t operate as a salon with a bunch of frills. Just haircuts, beard trims, and shaves.
What sets me apart is the personal connection I build with my clients. I want people to feel comfortable in my chair and leave feeling confident about themselves. I take pride in my attention to detail, my creativity, and constantly improving my craft.
Donnie B. Goods is more than just getting a haircut. It’s about building relationships, creating a welcoming environment, and giving people a service they can feel good about. Come in as a stranger and leave as a friend is a good way to put it. My goal is to continue growing the brand and build something that represents the hard work and dedication I’ve put into barbering since I was a teenager.
What matters most to you? Why?
From a business standpoint, making people feel good in their own shoes is what matters most to me. In a world where everything is online and there are lots of comparisons, set standards, and a bunch of negativity, I want my customers to come in knowing that I am there to help in whatever ways I can. I will always share my opinion, but I also will hear everyone out and make sure that they are getting what they want for themselves. What keeps me going at the end of each day as a barber is just knowing I have made many people feel better about their appearance. There is no better feeling than receiving a text message from a client a few hours after their appointment letting me know how good they feel about their haircut and how thankful they are.
