Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Sara Allen.
Hi Dr. Allen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I always planned to be a doctor when I grew up, I didn’t plan to get knocked up at 20. I went to medical school at 30 when my kids were in grade school. They’re now grown and I’m coming up on 12 years of being a physician. I was fortunate enough to be a partner in my practice back in Ohio, so I got to understand the revenue stream fairly well. Coming to Colorado, the healthcare market is quite different here. It is very mid-level heavy, and I don’t think patients understand the difference between our training. That, coupled with the necessary objectives for insurance companies and corporate care providers, is a recipe for poor quality care and poor patient outcomes. I have moved into the direct primary care (DPC) space not only for my own sanity (to prevent burnout), but to refocus primary care on relationships with patients–not profit margins.
I’m a neurospicy mom of grown queer kids, an amateur artist, runner of normal distances, motorcyclist, and globe trekker.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being brave enough to initiate this endeavor was the first hurdle. After experiencing some personal health issues in early 2025, I realized that life is too short to not be doing what I am called to do. And I was not called to check boxes for corporate overlords or to fight with insurance companies when they refuse to pay for patient care. My purpose and my passion is to provide high quality, affordable, comprehensive, relationship based care. DPC allows me to do that.
As you know, we’re big fans of Unbound Direct Health. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I think the most important thing patients should understand about Family Medicine is that we do it all! When your doctor has the luxury of time, we don’t just keep you well with the usual health screenings. We manage your chronic conditions without punting you to various specialists. And we are your urgent care, keeping you out of the ER for acute illnesses or injury. Family Medicine doctors specialize in full-spectrum care: cradle to grave.
We do not accept insurance, but our rates are very affordable ($55-115/mo). Relying on a comprehensive health plan entirely for access to primary care is like using an airplane to go grocery shopping. It will get the job done, but it is cumbersome overkill. (Speaking of groceries, our “cartvertisement” at a nearby King Soopers speaks to the broken state of healthcare in America.) Patients should have a back up plan for catastrophes, but even if they don’t, DPC affords them a path to better health and wellness, better quality of life.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking requires a lot of social energy. I think the key is to just show up/follow through. I’ve gone to dozens of events, and followed up on dozens of leads, and each one of them took social energy I wasn’t always in the mood to give. But each one also resulted in a tiny breadcrumb that is leading me along this path. Every connection I’ve made has either led to another one, or given me insight I needed on some piece or process of the business.
