Today we’d like to introduce you to Ian Campbell.
Hi Ian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been an entrepreneur in the sales and marketing space for just about my entire career. I started out as a marketing consultant at 20 years old when I had more guts than brains and didn’t realize that I was completely unqualified to be doing what I was doing. Fortunately, I was pretty good at it and was able to build a business off of it.
When I was in my 20s, I did a short stint as a jazz singer and pursued that as a career – something that was a lifelong dream for me. When that didn’t go as hoped, I decided to jump back into the marketing space and moved out to San Diego, where I spent eight years, before moving out here to Denver in 2016. When I moved here, I decided that I was ready to move on from the world of consulting and decided to make Mission Suite, which was then a side project, my full-time job.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I can’t even imagine what a “smooth road” would look like! 🙂 I’ve seen all of the standard ups and downs that most entrepreneurs have. I’ve run out of money, had to scrimp and save to make payroll, I’ve had to let people go and figure out how to bounce back from major losses.
I’ve been fortunate to avoid some major pitfalls that could have easily broken me and the business for good, and I’m fortunate to have a supportive wife and family who have propped me up when I’ve needed it. But if a “smooth road” is what you’re hoping for, entrepreneurship isn’t for you. I had to learn that lesson young.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Mission Suite?
Mission Suite is a CRM and sales automation software platform. We work with business owners, sales teams, and salespeople to help them use automation to get more sales appointments and close more deals.
We compete with a lot of major players in this world – Salesforce, Hubspot, etc – so setting ourselves apart can certainly be a challenge. I think that the biggest thing that sets us apart from our competition is our dedication to supporting and training. It’s part of our culture and it’s in our blood. These systems are only useful if you actually know what you’re doing with them and if you know how to use them so we dedicate a lot of time and resources to making sure that everyone who needs to knows how to use the platform.
