Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeanne Cross.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was in my twenties, I worked several summers with a Mother Teresa Home of the Destitute and Dying in Mumbai, India. My time in India expanded my view of the world and what I wanted in life. It gave me a passion to study both policy and systems, as well as therapy. This intersection in study led me to a double-masters program through Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After my study, I completed a post-graduate fellowship in the Philippines where I taught Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to a team of social workers who provided services among children and teens removed from situations of bonded labor and human trafficking. I raised the funding and developed a pilot scholarship program through the Department of Social Welfare and Development of the Philippines to fund education and three meals of rice daily for the children removed. After my post-graduate fellowship, I continued my training as a therapist and learned compelling evidence of the effectiveness of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) as the gold standard treatment for people who have experienced trauma. I trained extensively in EMDR therapy and opened EMDR Center of Denver with my wife who is also a trained EMDR therapist. It has been the gift of a lifetime to help folks find lasting relief and more fully create the lives they want.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My dad passed away from glioblastoma brain cancer on his 58th birthday. From the date of his cancer diagnosis to his death, he had 16 days. At times, I wonder to myself, “What would I do with my 16 days?” We can create the lives we are wanting for ourselves right now. Don’t blink. It’s later than you think.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
EMDR Center of Denver specializes in EMDR and talk therapy for trauma, depression, anger, and anxiety. EMDR is the “gold standard” therapy for all things trauma. Our clients experience rapid relief and results. People reach out to schedule with us because they are generally at a breaking point and need something in their lives to change. They are needing immediate relief. As a therapist, having folks thank you for changing their life is one of the most deeply satisfying things there is.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
In terms of starting my own practice, getting out of my own way and not believing the voices of the haters that we all have a tendency to internalize and play on repeat. It’s like we wrap ourselves in the meanest, snarkiest voices in our lives, and let those voices live rent free. Meanwhile, we have this amazing, free life waiting on the other side that could be ours. We get to flip the script and write our own story of our one wild, precious life whenever we are ready.
