Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer St. Peter.
Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey in education began in Montana, where I completed my undergrad and became a kindergarten teacher. The opportunity to shape young minds during their critical first years was both exciting and deeply rewarding. Every day I witnessed firsthand the incredible growth and curiosity of my students, which sparked a passion in me for early childhood development.
I began seeking a new challenge, so I decided to join Teach for America. This program brought me back to Denver where I grew up and I continued my teaching career in a diverse and supportive community.
After settling in Denver, it was here that I met my husband and we had our first son. When I became pregnant with our second child, I started to reflect on how I could best balance my family life with my career. The answer soon became clear: opening my own in-home preschool. This venture allowed me to continue nurturing children’s growth while providing the flexibility I needed as a mother. Driven by my deep passion for early childhood education, I was determined to create a space where children could develop emotionally, socially, and intellectually.
Now, six years in, my preschool has grown into a thriving and successful business with a waiting list of families eager to enroll. This continued interest is a testament to the nurturing environment, high standards, and strong sense of community we’ve built together. I am proud of how far we’ve come and grateful for the opportunity to play such an important role in these children’s early lives.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My preschool opened its doors right before the COVID-19 pandemic hit and the world shut down, which made it particularly challenging to build my business at first. Navigating those uncertain times was difficult and I ultimately made the decision to remain open despite many other programs closing their doors. Despite the initial obstacles, over time I was able to expand my license, allowing me to reach and support even more families in my community.
This expansion was both challenging and rewarding, requiring careful planning and a renewed focus on continuing education and compliance. It also enabled me to expand my program for the toddler population to help meet the needs of the community as well as provide quality education to our tiniest learners. Ultimately, I have been able to broaden my impact, welcoming even more children into a supportive space that encourages lifelong learning and curiosity.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Bright Beginnings Early Learning Childcare is my licensed, home-based childcare and preschool program designed for young learners. Recognizing the profound influence of early childhood experiences, my program provides a thoughtfully structured environment that fosters both creativity and curiosity. Child-led play is integrated with developmentally appropriate instruction to establish a strong academic foundation. My program has earned a level 4 Colorado Shines rating and participates in the UPK initiative which offers at least part-time or half-day preschool to every Colorado child in the year prior to kindergarten, ensuring all children can begin their educational journey with high-quality preschool education.
Given my background in education, my program has a strong focus on social and emotional foundations, as well as kindergarten readiness which I think sets me apart from others. I prioritize helping children build essential skills such as self-regulation, cooperation, and resilience, ensuring they are well-prepared for the transition to elementary school.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If you’re considering opening an in-home program, my best advice is to start by building a strong foundation of support and guidance. Having a strong mentor throughout the process was invaluable—they helped me navigate everything from licensing requirements to curriculum planning, and provided encouragement when things felt overwhelming.
I recently got certified as an early childhood coach, and that experience has deepened my understanding of both the business and developmental sides of early education. This credential has equipped me with valuable tools and strategies to mentor others, offering guidance on best practices, classroom management, and fostering positive relationships with families. By sharing my knowledge and experience, I can help new providers build confidence and create successful, nurturing environments for young children.
I also recommend seeking out professional development opportunities whenever you can as the field of education is constantly growing and changing. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or lean on experienced educators/providers. Remember that balancing high standards with compassion is key, and that the relationships you form with families will become a cornerstone of your preschool’s success. Surround yourself with people who share your vision, and stay committed to creating a nurturing, engaging environment where children can thrive.
