Community Highlights: Meet Jessica Klain of Physio, Yoga & Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Klain.

Jessica Klain

Hi Jessica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Most physical therapists have a typical origin story that involves playing sports and sustaining some sort of injury. My origin story is no different: My origin story is no different: At age 16, I had a major knee injury that required surgery and many, many months of physical therapy. Looking back, I now know that I was very lucky to have such a great team help me recover. Twenty-plus years later, I am running marathons, hiking mountains, and biking for hours at a time.

Similar to my origin story, the first decade of my professional career was fairly typical. I had two different PT jobs, saw a lot of patients, took many classes, and learned a lot. But I grew tired of the day-to-day work, was fed up with the healthcare system, and found my work environment increasingly difficult. So, I took a break from it all and moved to Thailand in 2020.

Taking a break from a profession I loved and excelled in was everything I didn’t know I needed. I spent a few months running daily, going to the beach and learning to surf, and trying many new foods. But I realized I missed being a physical therapist. I missed the structure of a job, interacting with new people, having colleagues who are also friends, and most of all, helping resolve someone’s pain and aiding their return to activity. So, I started taking online classes to start a business, scoured the internet for advice, and had many Zoom calls with my inner circle about what my next steps were.

A few months later, Physio Yoga & Wellness was born! I opened a clinic in Central Denver near City Park West in June 2021. The foundation is a holistic health and wellness center that combines physical therapy, yoga, and wellness coaching to help clients recover from injuries, reduce pain, and optimize their overall health. In early 2023 I opted to join forces with Muscle + Mindset, a woman owned gym in the Santa Fe Arts District doing great things for injury prevention in the lifting world. I am lucky to share space with this amazing lifting community along with a top-notch massage therapist.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business with no prior business education or experience was scary! Luckily, my friends and family were extremely supportive, and with their encouragement and collective knowledge, I was able to make my vision for Physio Yoga & Wellness come true.

I know healthcare can be confusing, unpredictable, expensive, and unsatisfying. Creating a company and a space that allows physical therapy to exist alongside yoga, exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle modifications enables injury prevention and recovery to occur on a continuum. This helps people to continue to work towards their health and wellness goals even if they aren’t injured.

Against common business advice to be “as niche as possible,” I decided to take my expertise in concussion and vestibular therapy and expand that as far and wide as I could. This allows me to meet people where they are in their healthcare journey and eliminates the typical physical therapy prescription of “twice a week for 6 weeks.” Many books, podcasts, and blogs advised against casting a wide net of services, but Physio Yoga & Wellness is proving it works. Current clients range from age 8 to 90 years old. Some people are working on their Boston qualifying marathon times, while others are working to put on their shoes pain-free. Exercise experience ranges from none at all to daily structured lifting routines. But the common thread is that people want to feel better and move better and need a little bit of help along the way. Phyio Yoga & Wellness is here to help.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Physio, Yoga & Wellness?

Many of us have had negative healthcare experiences. High and unknown costs, long wait times to get an appointment, poor communication, and lack of answers are just a few of my personal experiences. That is why I understand that not everyone is eager to make an appointment with a physical therapist. This is what sets Physio Yoga & Wellness apart. I know that healthcare works better when the provider and the client develop a professional relationship. One-on-one visits and open communication foster the healing environment we all need. With my extensive training and evidence-based therapy in physical therapy, nutrition, yoga, concussion and vestibular ailments, and exercise, I aim to empower each individual in a holistic and biopsychosocial manner. I take the time to listen, as I want to know your story, to help you get the tools you need for where you are now in your life, and to empower you to do more. Whether you are experiencing pain or simply want to improve your physical and mental fitness, PYW can help!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?

COVID-19 exposed many flaws and gaps in the healthcare system, both from a consumer and a provider perspective. In the physical therapy space, many clinics rapidly reduced hours, laid off workers, and some clinics even closed permanently. Many physical therapists experienced stress, fear of the unknown, and anxiety associated with the lack of job security and the elimination of a steady paycheck. I found myself in a lucky position, as I had already voluntarily stepped away from my full-time job and was financially and emotionally prepared to take time away from work. This allowed me to re-establish how to best frame and execute my passion for helping people heal. The pandemic gave me the time and space to learn about business, become a yoga instructor, and start Physio Yoga & Wellness from the ground up. Without the pandemic, I don’t think I would have had the time, energy, or courage to go outside of the traditional healthcare model.
Looking outside the bubble of my experience, there are several positive things that resulted from the healthcare system being pushed to it’s limits. A rapid transition to telehealth occured which allowed providers to continue providing care. This transition required investments in technology and training, as well as adjustments to treatment protocols and insurance coverage to accommodate virtual care. Physical therapists also were forced to get creative and to modify treatment plans to suit virtual sessions and address patients’ limited access to equipment at home. There was also a notable increase in focus on wellness and prevention. With more people working from home and experiencing different types of musculoskeletal issues, there was a growing emphasis on wellness, ergonomic consultations, and injury prevention.
