Community Highlights: Meet Jessica Spruill of Spruill Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Spruill.

Hi Jessica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my career in investment banking, where I spent more than a decade working in financial services. Over time, I realized I wanted to pursue a path that merged creative vision with precision. I’ve always been drawn to the interiors of homes — the furniture, layout, and art, and the details that make a space feel alive and thoughtfully composed.

I studied Interior Design at Parsons School of Design while overseeing the design and construction of several homes, including two new builds — an experience that reinforced my love for creating well-crafted, intentional spaces and gave me the foundation to launch Spruill Studio.

Today, I’m the founder and principal designer of Spruill Studio, a client-centered, design-forward interior design firm based in the Boulder/Denver metro area and the Vail Valley. My work is shaped by my background in business and project management as much as my love of design — I bring both structure and artistry to every project. I partner closely with clients, builders, and architects to create interiors that feel refined yet approachable, tailored to the way people really live.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road. I spent over a decade in corporate finance, where I thrived in structured, high-performing environments. Running my own business has been a whole different challenge. My MBA and business training gave me a foundation, but there’s a big difference between knowing what it takes to run a business and actually being the one responsible for everything- from operations to client service to growth.

One of the biggest hurdles has been marketing in a new age. I’ve never considered myself particularly ‘techy,’ so learning the ins and outs of social media, creating iMovies, updating my website, and keeping up with all the digital platforms has been a steep but rewarding learning curve. I’ve surprised myself with how much I’ve enjoyed that creative side of entrepreneurship.

Another ongoing challenge is finding and building the right client base. Referrals and word-of-mouth have been my biggest source of projects so far, which I’m incredibly grateful for. But to grow Spruill Studio the way I envision, I know I need to continue expanding beyond that through creative marketing and networking.

What makes it all worthwhile is the people I’ve met along the way. Networking, attending industry events and trade shows, connecting with reps, artists, and clients — those relationships have been some of the most fun and rewarding parts of this journey. Even though running a business is hard, I feel energized by the community I’ve been able to cultivate through it.

As you know, we’re big fans of Spruill Studio. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Spruill Studio, we believe a home should be as functional as it is beautiful. Aesthetic appeal is always fundamental to the design process, but it has to work in real life too. That means making sure the tiles you fall in love with for a shower aren’t dangerously slippery, or that a kitchen is designed for how you use it- whether it’s a streamlined, elegant space for someone who rarely cooks, or a thoughtfully outfitted, high-functioning area for the avid home cook or foodie.

Every project begins with getting to know our clients: not just their style preferences, but how they live day to day. I pride myself on building personal relationships and really understanding what motivates and relaxes people, what functional needs they have, and what kind of environment they want to come home to. That personal connection guides every design decision, large and small.

What sets Spruill Studio apart is a mix of design-forward thinking, attention to detail, and strong communication. I’m personally invested in making sure every choice is not only beautiful but appropriate and enduring- whether that’s helping a client understand that linen naturally wrinkles, that certain velvets crush and develop a patina, or that some leathers show wear more quickly. For many clients, those organic changes are part of the charm; the key is making sure clients understand how materials will age and that they love the result both now and in the years to come.

What I’m most proud of brand-wise is that Spruill Studio has stayed true to its values: creating interiors that are elevated yet approachable and aligned with the realities of how clients use and move through their homes. We’re known for delivering highly personalized service, where no two projects ever look the same because they’re tailored to each client’s lifestyle and vision. It’s a boutique, collaborative approach that makes the process as enjoyable as the result.

For me, the most rewarding part of this work is when a client walks into a finished space and it feels unmistakably theirs- polished, livable, and tailored to the way they truly live.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very driven and focused on results. I was the kind of kid who loved setting goals, working hard, and seeing things through- whether that meant striving for good grades or simply the satisfaction of checking something off a list. I also loved projects where the results were tangible. I enjoyed cleaning and organizing because you could immediately see the transformation, and I was constantly rearranging furniture, adding plants, and playing with lighting at home. Even then, I was fascinated by how small, intentional changes could completely shift the feel of a space.

That love of clear results is also what drew me to investment banking later, particularly mergers and acquisitions. You’d work incredibly hard on a deal, and then there was this clear, concrete moment of closure when the acquisition was complete and you could see the impact — and then move on to the next challenge. I think that same satisfaction carries through to my design work today, where I can see the very real effect of thoughtful choices on how a space looks and feels.

My mom was an artist, so I grew up going with my parents to art shows, helping set up and work their booth. Those experiences definitely shaped my work ethic, but they also instilled a love of art and an appreciation for how much art brings to an interior — adding personality, energy, and depth to a space. Looking back, all of those threads come together in what I do now.
