Community Highlights: Meet John & Sara Robinson of Hempy Llama Tea

Today we’d like to introduce you to John and Sara Robinson.

John and Sara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We started this family business out of necessity. We saw multiple needs to be met. First was the need for plant medicine to have a voice and a vehicle to reach more humans because as a collective our mind, body, and spirit is out of balance.

The second was our personal desire to create a family business, something that our children can help grow and allow our family more options and freedoms. We have grown this company from the ground up, starting it at the height of the pandemic, and continued to strive forward.

When it comes to our tea tags, labels, website design, mugs, tea ingredients, and hemp flower… well we source everything from other small and family-owned businesses. We are so excited to see how Hempy Llama Tea Co., will continue to grow and thrive!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We have come across hurdles after hurdles with our little business. CBD oil is fairly mainstream, but hemp flower is a whole other animal. Hemp flower wasn’t considered legal until the Farm Bill Act of 2018, and there is still a LOT of gray areas when it comes to what is “acceptable.”

From testing to proper labeling, from obtaining a credit card processor and finding a bank that supports a hemp flower business… well let’s just say we had our fair share of challenges. But the entire process has taught us so much about business, about ourselves, and about how much education around cannabis is still needed.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Hempy Llama Tea Co is known for Artisan Hemp Flower Tea. We integrate organic hemp flowers with various other organic herbs, tea leaves, and berries to create delicious blends of hemp flower tea that houses many health benefits. Most “CBD tea” products we found simply spray or soak tea leaves with CBD oil. We knew we had to set ourselves apart.

Although it created many more challenges, we decided to use raw hemp flowers with our teas. In every product we create, our mission is to keep the cannabis plant in its most natural state… this allows for optimal results for our customers. We currently have seven different teas, tisanes, a true full-spectrum CBD oil as well as some really cute Hempy Llama Merchandise. Our teas taste amazing, but they also have such a calming effect. We strive to help other humans feel more at peace.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Best advice? An incredible product will only go so far without incredible branding. Find a need to be met and let it be something you can really put your heart into. Don’t let others detour you and don’t be afraid to outsource. You don’t need a ton of money to start, just a good product or service, a few close friends to try it out, and start spreading the word!
