Community Highlights: Meet Katie Mills of Aspen Aesthetics + Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Mills

Hi Katie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey as a first responder in rural Wyoming, where my passion for the intersection of science and caring took root. While pursuing a degree in outdoor education, I worked as an EMT and spent several summers at an outdoor camp for young adults with learning differences. These experiences, coupled with my work as a nanny during the school year, gave me a unique perspective on the value of empathy and connection.

Eventually, I felt drawn to nursing and enrolled in nursing school, specializing in cardiac care and cardiothoracic surgery. For the next ten years, I worked as a cardiac nurse, most of them as a travel nurse, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. The experience was both challenging and rewarding, but over time, I realized I wanted to connect with clients in a more proactive, preventive way, rather than focusing on reactive care.

This curiosity led me to explore functional medicine and integrative health, where I found a new sense of purpose. I left bedside nursing to open my own IV hydration and chronic illness management business, which allowed me to take a more holistic, client-centered approach to wellness.

Soon after, my business counterpart, Kelly McKay, approached me about becoming the wellness director at Aspen Aesthetics + Wellness. We now offer over 200 aesthetic and wellness services, with a focus on helping our clients achieve their most naturally elevated way of life. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful to be in a role where I can help people in a truly transformative way.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It certainly hasn’t been without bumps. Stepping into the role of a business owner was a steep learning curve. Suddenly, I had to navigate areas like finance, marketing, and operations—things that aren’t typically part of a nursing background. However, I was fortunate to be surrounded by incredible, business-minded people who not only understood my vision but also supported me in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Their guidance helped me stay grounded while I learned the ropes.

On top of that, I started graduate school around the same time I opened my business, pursuing my Doctorate of Nursing Practice with a focus on functional medicine and integrative health. Balancing the demands of growing a business and managing the intensity of a doctorate program has definitely made for a full plate, but both paths are so aligned with my passion that I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
To support my personal and professional growth, I rely on several key resources. One book that has profoundly impacted me is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, which I read every year. Its themes of pursuing dreams and listening to one’s heart resonate deeply with me.

I also use the Motion app to help organize my day and stay focused, ensuring I can manage my time effectively. For insights into human behavior and wellness, I turn to the Huberman Lab and Hidden Brain podcasts, both of which offer valuable perspectives on various topics. Additionally, TED Talks Daily provides a wealth of inspiration and innovation, while the Motiv8 podcast offers practical strategies for personal development. Together, these resources help me stay motivated and informed on my journey to becoming the best version of myself.
