Community Highlights: Meet Leticia Abajo Torrijos of Deshaciendo Nudos. Untangled

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leticia Abajo Torrijos.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always been in the helping and teaching professions in many different capacities, and mostly with the Spanish-speaking community in Boulder County, so when I started wanting to offer a more specialized care for my clients and participants, I decided to become a Coach and Mentor. Then the pandemic hit and I decided to start my own company, so I could address the issues that I saw with certain populations. That is how “Deshaciendo Nudos. Untangled” was born, to assist members of the LGBTQIA2s+ Spanish-speaking community, including parents and youth. This expansion led me a little later to extend my care to all families.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not. Some of the struggles come from within myself, and for those I have a mentor of my own that guides and supports me. I also joined a nonprofit called Entrepreneurship for All and learned to run my business from them. Other struggles come from holding 3 other jobs while trying to develop my own business.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Deshaciendo Nudos. Untangled?
“Deshaciendo Nudos. Untangled”, DNU for family and friends, is a private practice centered in family education and coaching. We develop talks, courses, webinars, and workshops to bring awareness about the LGBTQIA2s+ issues to both families and the community at large, especially in the Spanish-speaking world. We work with Schools, nonprofits, companies, and individuals. We also help families and individuals with generational, intercultural and intrafamily communication and life skills development.

Finally, we assist with communication from business and organizations to the extended community and that includes translation, interpreting and project management directed to the Spanish-speaking population in Colorado.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Sometimes I believe luck exists, for example I was born in a country where education was valued and possible. My family encouraged me to pursue my dreams, we had a middle-class life with opportunities right there. I was born into that just by luck. We call all of that privilege these days as it is.

Other times I do not believe in luck, I have paid attention to what was around me and therefore, I have taken all the opportunities that came to me, I have taken risks to reach to what I want and need. When I didn´t get what I wanted, I figured a way to find it somewhere else or to create it myself. So, is this luck? Or is it my personality? Am I lucky that I have that personality? I also feel that when things go wrong for me, I tend to learn from it, I don´t let this stop me from my ultimate goal.

So, I am not sure what role luck has played in my life, but one thing I am sure of is that I am fortunate! So maybe fortune has had an important role in my life.
