Community Highlights: Meet Lindsay May of The Happy Marketing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay May.

Lindsay May

Hi Lindsay, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story started in corporate about 15 years ago. I was climbing the corporate ladder in marketing roles, and I was obsessed with my career. But after working 50-60 hours a week and still not being “enough” in C-Suite roles, I decided it was time to stop sacrificing my mental health for a paycheck.

One year ago in February 2023, I launched The Happy Marketing Co. — an SEO agency and Squarespace website design studio! It has been a rollercoaster in my first year, of course. But I’ve found so much fulfillment in my career when I went all in on my big dreams.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road to entrepreneurship. I started out offering every type of marketing service, and I started getting burned out again. I workshopped my skills, my goals, and what I really wanted out of my business, and that’s where I started realizing I needed to narrow down. I’m so glad I did.

Besides that, I think it’s really easy to get stuck and hold yourself back when you’re a new entrepreneur. It can be really difficult! In your first year of business, it’s also not necessarily consistent when it comes to income. That has been something that has been difficult, but now I know to plan ahead and not get to the end of the month and start freaking out about income. You learn what helps every single day of business. I’m grateful for the journey.

As you know, we’re big fans of The Happy Marketing Co. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Happy Marketing Co. is an SEO and custom Squarespace website design firm. What makes my business different is that it’s all backed by SEO research and experience, so everything I do is to help business owners and brands get on the first page of Google and scale organically.

SEO (search engine optimization) can be complicated and technical, but I like to break it down so business owners and managers feel empowered and confident when it comes to their websites. I’m really proud that I educate on SEO and website optimization every time I’m posting on social media or speaking at an event. I also like to make it fun!

I want everyone to know that if their website is merely existing rather than converting, it’s time to put energy into your website so it works for them 24/7. Social media is great for business, but did you know that SEO and websites generate 1,000% more website traffic than social media?

Another fun fact that that the lifespan of social media content is around 24-48 hours, while blogs and website content have a lifespan of 2-10 YEARS. It’s time to get your website on Google and increase your sales.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I felt like I had a lot of bad luck when I started my business. I would meet a lot of potential clients, but they never signed with me. Then I started realizing that I was getting in my head, acting desperate, and not attracting the right clients into my world.

I do think “luck” is a bit of an illusion because we can control so much more than we know. I think trusting in yourself, in the universe, and going all in will get you much further than random luck will.
