Community Highlights: Meet Maria Cooper of Sopris Construction & Investments, Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Cooper.

Hi Maria, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Mexico City, where my parents had moved from their hometowns to study medicine. After completing their studies, they relocated our family to Chihuahua, Chihuahua, where I was raised. There, I studied and practiced civil engineering for more than a decade. Thirteen years ago, I decided to emigrate to Colorado when, during a vacation in Carbondale, I met the man who is now my husband, Jason Cooper. Together, we began building our dream of becoming real estate investors. To make it possible, we lived for almost two months in a tent in the backyard of the first house we bought to remodel in Englewood, Colorado, as we did not have the financial resources to live elsewhere. Today things are different, times are better, and it is because we chose—and continue to choose—the adventure of pursuing a dream.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not a smooth road at all. When you start a business with very little money, you have to be resilient, creative, and resourceful.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are real estate investors and remodelers. We buy, renovate, and sell houses, and we also own rental properties. In the competitive world of real estate, we always prioritize quality over profit. If a project or investment “doesn’t feel right” we simply don’t pursue it. We believe that a business can benefit everyone involved and positively impact the community it serves.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Even though I have a mindset of taking risks in my business, I don’t like riding bikes because I find it too risky.
