Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Pontiero.
Hi Maria , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Years ago, I co-owned a cozy little bistro with my mom. At the time, I thought my entrepreneurial days were behind me—but life had other plans. After working at a clinic that suddenly changed course, I found myself needing to pivot quickly. Starting my own practice wasn’t in the plan, but looking back, it was truly a blessing in disguise. Rising Lotus Integrative Psychiatry was born from that unexpected turn, and I couldn’t be more grateful. Being my own boss again has reignited a passion I didn’t realize I missed.
My journey into psychiatry began over 20 years ago in pharmaceutical sales, which gave me a front-row seat to the world of mental health. Eventually, I transitioned into nursing, knowing deep down that I would want to do more. When COVID hit, like many others, I found myself reassessing everything. I missed the mental health field and wanted to make a bigger impact. Fortunately, Regis University had just launched their Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program, and I jumped in with both feet. Earning my degree during such a challenging time wasn’t easy, but I’ve never once regretted the decision.
From the beginning, I knew that if I entered the mental health field, I wanted to approach it differently. I was drawn to an integrative model that looks at the whole person—not just their symptoms. At Rising Lotus, I strive to combine evidence-based psychiatric care with nutrition, exercise, hormone balance and more.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the hardest parts of starting over was leaving my clients behind at the last clinic. It was heartbreaking not to be able to continue care for those I had built strong connections with. But what surprised and humbled me most was how many of them went out of their way to find me. That experience reminded me of the real impact I was making—and continue to make—in people’s lives. It also reaffirmed that this work is deeply relational and rooted in trust.
Today, Rising Lotus continues to grow through word of mouth. New clients often find their way here because they’re looking for something more—something beyond just medication. They want care that sees and treats the whole person.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I provide personalized psychiatric care through both telehealth and in-person appointments. I specialize in working with adults with depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, bipolar disorder, ADHD, trauma, and gender-affirming care.
What sets my practice apart is our integrative, whole-person approach. In addition to evidence-based psychiatric treatment, I incorporate lifestyle medicine to support long-term mental wellness. This may include:
Nutritional support and healthy eating plans
Targeted supplements for nutritional and hormonal balance
Sleep optimization strategies
Movement and physical activity guidance
Stress management and mindfulness tools
Hormonal health assessments and support
I believe healing happens when mind, body, and environment are all addressed with care. Our goal is to empower you with the tools, insights, and support needed to thrive—mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I want to take a moment to give credit to the incredible people who helped me get to where I am today—owning and operating my own clinic.
My longtime mentor, Victoria Cabral, PMHNP-BC, whose guidance and support was instrumental in getting this clinic off the ground. Her wisdom and encouragement made all the difference.
Krista, my amazing admin, jumped on board so quickly helping everything run smoothly from the very start. Her dedication everyday hasn’t gone unnoticed.
My fellow colleagues who have also taken the leap into starting their own clinics—support, shared experiences, and mutual encouragement have meant so much.
Family, boyfriend, and friends—always believing in me, even when I doubted myself. They courage to take this step.
This clinic is more than just a business—it’s a reflection of everyone who’s stood by me, lifted me up, and pushed me forward. I’m deeply grateful.
