Community Highlights: Meet Rachel Hayes of Rh Counseling and Aromatherapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Hayes

Hi Rachel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well I was raised in less than a normal situation, but really what is normal. My birth mom had just turned 20 before giving birth to me and that’s how old I was also when I had my first daughter. As an adult I have learned that my birth mom (who I am not close to) slept with 3 men during that time before I was born and she didn’t know who the father was and she said “I didn’t realize that it just took one time to have a baby, so I didn’t tell your actual father or know really who it was until now that you found this family”. So I have known I was smarter than her since I was about 5 or 6 years old when she asked me how to spell dairy because she spelt it as “diary”. Then she married someone that sexual abused me and mentally/emotionally as well that lead to me to not really be able to tell anyone or open up about it until I was about 12-13 years old. After experiencing all of that I wanted to always help other people which led me to the current occupation I am in now with helping people therapeutically. I am feeling now that I am healing parts of my younger self as I am helping others get through their lives now as adults.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has never been a smooth road in my life. The struggles ranged from my birth mom being in a childlike role herself as I was trying to grow up and feeling as a kid I was more in charge of my life and in charge of what I could or could not do/should or should not do. So being a survivor of sexual trauma, and mental abuse which lead to it in other areas of my life. And myself going from never wanting to have kids because of how she was as a mother and that worrying me to being groomed by my boss at my job at 19 y/o (boss was 29 y/o) and now pregnant by someone who could punch you in the face and make you think it was your fault (really happened to me). However, after having a baby and being a mom I knew I had to do something different than what I had growing up. And to actually be a mom, parent and adult.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I have worked for the Meadows behavioral health The Ranch (eating disorders) and Virtual IOP. I have been trained in EMDR, Certified Brainspotter, PIT II Advanced, trauma therapy, Masters Aromatherapist, Motivational interviewing and more. I try to take many trainings to provide all clients with what will be most helpful to their needs. I have helped those struggling with codependency, boundaries, relationship issues (including narcissistic partners), addictions, eating disorders, trauma (childhood and more), PTSD (including veterans and active duty military), anxiety, and depression. I try to really listen to my clients to see what their needs are and provide them with a chance to feel validated and heard.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
In our city there is a wide variety of people living here from other areas of the US and world. We also have a lot of events put on for various things that brings in people from all of Colorado and more areas. What I like least is big companies trying to come into the small town/city and add negative things to the area that are less than helpful.
