Community Highlights: Meet Rachelle Mapes of Black Sheep

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachelle Mapes.

Rachelle Mapes

Hi Rachelle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
The inspiration stemmed from a personal frustration. My husband and I found ourselves constantly disappointed by the lack of variety and affordability in motorcycle gear available locally. We had to travel long distances just to get our hands on decently priced vests, chaps, and boots.

That frustration sparked the idea of creating a store that would cater to the diverse needs of bikers. We added in sewing as well knowing that finding a place that specializes in sewing patches was also hard to come by. None of us had prior experience in the apparel industry, so there was a steep learning curve from retail to sewing.

Every step required a considerable amount of research and perseverance. However, our shared love for motorcycles and the belief that riders deserved better options kept us going. Today we have one of the last standings locally owned Motorcycle Apparel shops that also offer sewing in the front range, and maybe even Colorado.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the significant hurdles was learning the art of sewing and understanding that bikers are out there in all seasons, and it takes quality thread to uphold the stitch. Learning to sew with a pocket machine took some time and new muscle memory, troubleshooting the machines, and making sure our customers were happy with their patches.

We felt like a hot mess when we first started. The slow winter season was another one of those challenges. Riding tends to slow down in colder months, impacting our sales. We had to strategize to maintain a steady flow of business during these months. Some years we closed down and were only open on weekends. We started introducing winter-specific products, organizing events, and collaborating with local riding clubs were some of the ways we adapted to the seasonal fluctuations.

The higher overhead costs, especially with quality leather goods, were a significant consideration. We had to strike a balance between maintaining affordability for our customers and ensuring the quality that reflects our reputation. Learning to bring in only popular items and offering ordering on extended sizes or other items has helped us with those overhead costs.

We have a smaller store, and people are surprised at how small it is and how much we have to offer. Space management has been essential for the success of Black Sheep Co. Initially, we had to get creative with our layout. We invested time in designing a store layout that maximizes every inch of space while maintaining an inviting atmosphere for our customers.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
It is more than just a business; it’s a passion project born out of a love for motorcycles and a commitment to providing riders with exceptional gear. At our store, we specialize in selling high-quality motorcycle apparel, including vests, chaps, boots, helmets, gloves, and accessories designed for both style and functionality.

Some of the great brands we offer are SHOEI, HJC, Biltwell, Lanesplitter, LS2, FIRST MFG, Daniel Smart, Milwaukee Leather, UNIK, and more. What sets us apart is our dedication to filling a void we identified in the market. We take pride in offering a diverse range of products that cater to the unique preferences of riders. Our commitment to using quality manufacturers, and the services of sewing patches distinguishes us from others in the industry. We believe that riders shouldn’t have to compromise between affordability and top-notch gear, and we’ve made it our mission to bridge that gap.

Were more than a store; we’re a community hub for motorcycle enthusiasts. We take pride in fostering a sense of camaraderie among our customers. Beyond providing excellent products, we organize events, collaborate with local riding clubs, and sponsor charity rides. Our store is a reflection of the spirit of the open road, and we want our customers to feel that connection every time they step into our store.

Can you talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is the opportunity to give back to the community and witness the positive impact it has on both our customers and the larger biker community. There’s a profound joy in seeing our customers walk away satisfied, hearing their stories, and being able to assist them in any way possible.

The genuine connections formed through these interactions bring a sense of fulfillment and purpose. One of the most gratifying aspects is observing the biker community coming together to support those in need. Currently, we’re organizing a coat drive for the homeless, and the overwhelming response of donations has truly warmed my heart. Witnessing the generosity and compassion of the biker community, as they rally together to make a difference in the lives of others, is incredibly uplifting.

The joy derived from giving back and fostering a sense of community goes beyond the transactions in the store. It’s about creating a positive ripple effect, where the spirit of generosity extends beyond our walls and into the lives of those who need it most. This, in turn, reinforces the notion that our store is not just a business but a catalyst for positive change and unity within the biker community. The collective impact of these efforts brings a profound and lasting happiness that goes beyond the day-to-day operations of the store.
