Community Highlights: Meet Randall Fishburn of Randall, Jr. Photography – Same Day Smiles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Randall Fishburn.

Hi Randall, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It all started with a gift from my grandfather — a little point-and-shoot camera I got as a kid. I didn’t know it at the time, but that camera would kickstart everything. I dabbled with it growing up, but it wasn’t until high school that I really fell back in love with photography. I started shooting senior photos for friends, and something clicked — pun intended.

Over the years, I photographed everything from local events to media days, and what began as a side hustle turned into a full-blown career. Today, I run Randall Jr. Photography in Colorado Springs, focusing on bold, same-day images for athletes, seniors, and events.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road — more like a gravel path with a few surprise potholes. Like most creative careers, photography comes with a learning curve that doesn’t come with a manual. Early on, I had to figure out how to run a business, not just take great photos. That meant pricing, contracts, marketing — all while still trying to be creative and meet deadlines.

One of the biggest challenges has been balancing fast turnarounds with quality. I pride myself on delivering images quickly — sometimes same-day — which sounds great (and it is!), but behind the scenes, that takes serious planning and hustle. Add in a few gear malfunctions, missed sunsets, and unpredictable Colorado weather, and it keeps you humble real quick.

But honestly, every bump has helped shape the way I work today. It’s taught me how to stay flexible, communicate clearly, and most importantly — keep creating images that clients love.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Randall, Jr. Photography is based in Colorado Springs, but I like to say I’ll travel anywhere a camera can go (and maybe a little farther if snacks are involved). I specialize in sports and portrait photography — particularly Media Day photos, senior portraits, and team events — with a bold, laid-back style that’s all about capturing people at their best, without the awkward posing or fake smiles.

What I’m most known for is speed without sacrificing quality. My turnaround times are fast — sometimes same-day — which is how the name Same Day Smiles came to be. Coaches love it. Parents love it. And honestly, I love seeing the reaction when someone gets a killer photo just hours after the shoot.

What sets me apart is the experience I bring to each session. It’s fun, it’s relaxed, and I know how to read a room — whether it’s a rowdy football team or a senior who’s nervous in front of the lens. I’ve had my work featured on Denver 7 News, AAA of Colorado, and I’ve contributed to local magazines — but honestly, what I’m most proud of is the reputation I’ve built for being dependable, professional, and still somehow fun to work with.

If readers take away anything, I’d want it to be this: I don’t just take photos. I capture moments that make people feel seen, confident, and excited to share. Whether it’s a senior portrait or a whole team’s Media Day, I bring the same energy, creativity, and attention to detail every time.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned? That photography is just as much about people as it is about pictures. You can have all the latest gear, perfect lighting, and the sharpest lens — but if you can’t connect with your subject, the photo’s going to feel flat.

Learning to make people feel comfortable, seen, and confident in front of the camera has been a game-changer. It’s not about forcing a smile — it’s about creating a space where the real one shows up.

On the business side, I’ve also learned that consistency beats perfection. Not every day is glamorous — there are late nights, last-minute edits, and coffee-fueled marathons — but showing up, staying reliable, and treating every shoot with the same level of care? That’s what builds trust and keeps people coming back.

Oh — and always double-check that you have your memory cards. Always.
