Community Highlights: Meet Resilient Futures of Resilient Futures

Today we’d like to introduce you to Resilient Futures .

Resilient Futures

Hi Resilient Futures, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In 2018, Resilient Futures emerged when three clinical psychologists united under a unified mission to cultivate safe, equitable, and resilient communities for every young person. These remarkable women are Dr. Laura McArthur, Dr. Eleonora Cahill, and Dr. Megan Brennan.

Driven by their collective expertise and unwavering dedication, Resilient Futures was conceived to help bridge the gap in trauma-informed and equity-focused training within schools and youth-serving organizations. Together, Ellie, Laura, and Megan recognized that behind many youth behavioral challenges lie untold stories of adversity, where what appears as maladaptive behaviors are often survival mechanisms in disguise. Now the question was how to bring this knowledge, along with practical trauma-informed tools and strategies, to educators and community leaders – creating shifts in mindset, behaviors, and ultimately school culture – driving sustainable change.

Drawing from their extensive experience at acclaimed institutions such as the Harvard School of Education, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), UPenn, and more, the trio saw the urgent need for a dedicated nonprofit entity to cater fully to the clamoring demands for training and support from educational institutions nationwide.

As society grapples with the harsh realities of poverty, stress, racism, abuse & neglect, and other forms of trauma affecting our youth at alarming rates, Resilient Futures stands as a beacon of hope and healing. With each passing day, schools and organizations increasingly acknowledge the profound impact of trauma and inequity on their students, teachers, and everyone in the school community. Consequently, the demand for trauma-informed training and programming has surged. Five years since its founding, Resilient Futures has trained 5,400+ educators and community leaders, subsequently impacting over 165,000 students across the country.

At the heart of their work remains the commitment to unraveling the intricate web of trauma, race, and poverty. Through comprehensive training and advocacy, Resilient Futures champions the cultivation of environments where safety, equity, and resilience flourish for all.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like many businesses, the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic along with an uprising in awareness of racial stress and trauma in 202o presented us with significant struggles – we adapted to providing our resources online and ultimately grew to our newly offerend self-paced online training and racial healing program.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Resilient Futures is a non-profit organization that creates and guides the implementation of trauma-informed, equity-centered programming with healing at the forefront. We think about adversity and trauma through the lens of resilience, empowering our partners with the knowledge of how trauma presents in children and adults, and offering strategies that meet trauma responses with empathy and understanding.

Knowledge of the emotional, physiological, and neurological impacts of trauma changes the way we perceive and interact with others. When we meet adversity with compassion and a desire to validate & heal – rather than to judge or condemn – we manifest communities of care that empower people with self-knowledge and agency.

Our work advances the narrative around personal and systemic trauma with an equity lens, bringing it to the foreground of community conversation with education and practices that strengthen our capacity to grow as individuals, while advocating for sustainable change.

We are proud that we’ve been contacted by schools and organizations around the country and are now able to offer online trainings true to our mission.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Resilient Futures was conceptualized and founded to expand the reach of trauma-informed practices while centralizing race-based equity. Our focus on equity has been our guiding light from day one and the lens of Cultural Humility grounds every decision, policy, practice, and both internal and external interactions.
