Community Highlights: Meet Robin Baker of The People Factor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Baker.

Hi Robin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got my start in HR when the HR Manager at my company shared the career path with me and became a mentor. Over the years, I’ve worked across the private sector, utilities, public sector, and nonprofit organizations. I’ve always had the dream of owning my own business and finally decided to take the leap. As an HR consultant, I get the opportunity to be a resource and provide value to many organizations instead of just one.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think any road is completely smooth. When starting a business, there are always challenges that come along the way. One of my biggest struggles was the mental shift from organizational security to entrepreneurial uncertainty. I had to learn to trust my expertise enough to put myself out there as the resource, not just a resource within a larger company. Practically speaking, I also had to figure out how to run a business—the marketing, the systems, the financial management—while still delivering the high-quality, relationship-focused HR work I’m passionate about. But honestly? Those challenges have made me better at what I do and more empathetic to the leaders I serve who are navigating their own growth journeys.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The People Factor?
The People Factor supports small businesses, nonprofits, and ministries with human resources guidance, employee relations strategy, team development, and leadership coaching. I specialize in helping organizations that are under-resourced when it comes to HR. These organizations don’t typically have the resources for a full-time HR department, so these tasks fall on the owner, executive director, or lead pastor. Whether they have 1 employee or 100, HR can be a full-time role—and they already have their own full-time job to tend to. Most of the time, they don’t even know where to start.

That’s where I come in. I believe in a relational approach to HR and putting the human back into human resources. Too many people have had negative experiences with HR, and I’m working to change that one small organization at a time.

I help leaders create a culture where people genuinely feel valued and can thrive. As a certified facilitator for The Six Types of Working Genius (created by Patrick Lencioni), I help teams understand their natural strengths and work in ways that energize rather than drain them. This creates a more productive and fulfilling environment for everyone. I’m also passionate about leadership development and creating training experiences that people actually remember and enjoy, not doze off and forget.

I’m very proud of the trust I build with my clients. They know I operate with integrity and that I genuinely care about them and their people, not just their policies. HR doesn’t have to be something you dread—it can be a tool for healing workplace relationships and helping your organization grow in healthy, sustainable ways. This is people’s livelihood we’re talking about, and I treat it with the seriousness and care it deserves

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
At the end of the day, what drives me is knowing that when leaders feel supported and teams feel valued, everyone wins. I’ve experienced poor leadership firsthand and know how damaging it can be—not just to productivity, but to people’s wellbeing and sense of worth. That’s why I am so passionate about helping leaders become the best they can be. I’ve also experienced my own growing pains as an entrepreneur, and it’s made me deeply empathetic to the leaders I serve. Their success—and the wellbeing of their people—genuinely matters to me, and that’s what gets me up in the morning.
