Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Ashlow.

Sean Ashlow

Hi Sean, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My path to becoming a Creative Director at Anchovies isn’t typical. Raised amidst the vibrant, often gritty life of Colfax in Denver, known for its dive bars and raw cultural scenes, I’ve gained an unparalleled understanding of humanity.

This exposure has deeply influenced my ability to connect with people, enabling me to craft brands that resonate on a more authentic level. It’s this mix of raw, street-wise insight and creative intuition that defines my approach, setting myself and my agency apart in the industry.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey with Anchovies has had its challenges, it’s been a path marked by self-discovery and learning. The biggest challenge has been balancing my creative instincts with the practicalities of running a business.

This journey has been about deeply understanding who we are as an agency and who we aim to serve. In developing our foundational principles, we’ve been heavily influenced not just by the legacies of iconic designers like Paul Rand and Massimo Vignelli, but also by our love for Swiss design.

The precision, simplicity, and timeless aesthetic of Swiss design profoundly resonate with our approach, guiding our philosophy and shaping our work. These influences combine to form a unique foundation for our agency, where classic design principles meet brave creativity. This took a while to get right!

We’ve been impressed with Anchovies, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Anchovies is a boutique agency specializing in branding for high-net-worth markets and luxury brands. Our USP lies in our ability to blend youthful energy with sophistication, giving ‘non-sexy’ brands the permission to look as attractive as their success.

Our core philosophy is about embracing duality – bringing brave, contemporary branding to traditionally conservative industries. We specialize in brand identity, strategy, and particularly naming, a niche where we’ve carved a significant presence.

Networking and finding a mentor can have a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My perspective on mentorship deviates from the conventional. I firmly believe that the greatest mentor for any creative individual is the human experience itself. It’s about immersing yourself in the diversity of human life, understanding varying behaviors, mental models, and the subtleties that define our existence.

This exercise into the depths of human understanding cultivates a profound sense of empathy, a crucial tool for any creative professional. Empathy enables us to communicate more effectively through design, words, and images, resonating deeply with our audience.

So, my advice to fellow creatives is to seek mentorship not just in individuals but in experiences. Explore and understand the myriad ways of being human – that knowledge and insight are your true mentors, guiding you in crafting work that genuinely connects and communicates.
