Today we’d like to introduce you to William Adams.
Hi William, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is William Adams and I am the artist and founder of Relic Fine Jewelry. My interest in metal fabrication and jewelry design started around 2014 while I was attending community college. After spending a bit over a year becoming more and more fascinated with gemstones and jewelry, I was directed by a close friend to check out a school called the Gemological Institute of America. I visited the school in Carlsbad California and quickly fell in love. I knew that I had to go to this school if I wanted to make a career out of jewelry and gemstones. Over the following summer, I worked and saved money to make this dream a reality. I applied for a scholarship and was blessed with a full ride to the gemology program! Through trusting in the universes and following my heart’s compass, I was steered in a direction that changed my life for the best! Since then, I have expanded my skill sets at other training facilities like GRS and the New Approach School for Jewellers. Learning new techniques from masters using state-of-the-art tools has allowed me to progress at a great speed!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path I’ve taken through schooling and the building of my business has not been an easy one. The trials and tribulations of developing a business, and learning all of the skills needed to work as jeweler have been challenging, yet extremely rewarding! Along the ups and downs, the wins, and losses, my journey as a jewelry artist has been one that has sculpted me in many ways. Through my practice, I have developed a strong attention to detail, higher levels of patience, and an appreciation for many design aesthetics. The passion I feel for creating, and the unique connections I make with my clients, reassures me that all the struggles are well worth it! The excitement of my clients face when they see their handmade RELIC motivates me through any challenges that I face.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Relic Fine Jewelry I specialize in custom-made fine jewelry, hand engraving, and gemology. I make anything from unique abstract pendants and bracelets to high-end diamond bridal jewelry. My designs focus on pavé stone setting, with hand-engraved embellishments, using top-quality natural gemstones. I strive to make my custom design experience a fun and interactive one for me and my clients! By creating sentimental jewelry with high-quality materials and inviting my customers’ input throughout the process, I can offer my clients a truly unique experience that you will rarely find in an average jewelry store. I am proud to create items that are filled with love and intention. Making these pieces is truly a blessing and an honor!
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I feel a strong shift in the gemstone and jewelry industries is underway and will continue to change in the years to come. One main change in the trends that I’ve noticed is that many buyers are shifting from large cooperate brands to local artisan makers. Clients these days are showing interest in one-of-a-kind pieces with unique gemstones as opposed to mass-produced, commercial quality products. As more awareness is brought to the public about inhumane and unethical mining operations, a focus on fair trade gemstones and metals is trending. Sourcing recycled metals, and getting gemstones from small artisanal miners, are a couple ways that many in the jewelry industry are making efforts to provide ethical practices and products for their communities. When creating new designs for my brand I enjoy working with innovative gemstone artists. This allows me to create more unique, one-of-a-kind pieces while supporting other brands who focus on mindful sourcing and fair-trade practices.
