Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Denoyer.
Hi Shawn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started working as soon as I was able to find someone that would hire a kid. I would walk around the neighborhood after school looking for construction sites and ask if I could clean or do anything needed done that I could make a couple bucks to buy the toys I wanted. That stemmed into self-motivated love of earning what I needed and wanted. I moved out of my mom’s apartment at 15. Started my first company landscaping in high school and kept passing grades. I ended up dropping out due to having my first son in my junior year, adopted my oldest son and married my love at 18, had my evil mini-me daughter at 21! I kept learning every trade I could get my hands on while drawing and writing as a hobby.
When I was 21, I published my first poetry book, which won the editors choice award! Even longer story shortened, I continued to be over loyal to companies sacrificing my family time and personal health at minimum wage. I’ve lost an arm for a company that fired as soon as I was released from PT, even after I went back the day after I was cut. With all my failures and learning, I have created businesses that give people the freedom to be with their loved ones and never have the feeling of being used. I teach everyone I can how to take their first jump into entrepreneurship, as I believe your smile is worth more than any dollar amount.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road and still isn’t! I hope it never is. It’s all the struggles, failures, and people against your success that drives me harder to show my kids anything you want, you can earn. There’s no better learning experience than hardships as long as you stay strong enough to use them for strength and not give up or make excuses.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My hobbies of art and writing has turned my career into tattooing. I go by Poet in the industry and have been tattooing for over 13 years. I do any and all styles but specialize in colorwork. I’ve created a style of my own I call “Color splash”. It’s like watercolor only fully saturated.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I didn’t grow up like most kids. Raised by a different biker club each week without a father, my mother and I ended up homeless for a while in downtown Denver early 90s. I Ended up getting my neck broke by street gangs for wearing the wrong color. After that, getting bullied for my amazing mullet and 70s pop bottle glasses, I became a defender of kids that couldn’t defend themselves. A bully of bullies. Got myself into multiple martial arts and wanted to kick just like Van Damme. My grandma even joined with me. One day she even sparred against Chuck Norris in one of our tournaments. Moved out of my poisonous mother’s place at 15 and stayed in school. I even tried to join the Marines with a few of my football buddies in high school till I fell in love with my wife now of 20+ years and created my son. By 18, I married and adopted my oldest son! Sorry, this all sounds repetitive, but I’m proud!
