Conversations with Abby Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Jones.

Hi Abby, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since I was little, I LOVED taking pictures! When I was about 8, I remember picking up my mom’s camera on a road trip and just taking pictures of anything and everything! As I got a little older, my cousin and I spent a lot of time getting dressed up and taking pictures in our backyards and all around our neighborhood. Looking back, it seemed more like a phase because I was so young. Because of my age and lack of experience, more of my time and focus went into school and sports because at the time that is what was important! I needed to graduate and go to college. Fast-forwarding to after I graduated high school, I dabbled in modeling with a local photographer and everything about it brought back my confidence in myself and my desire to take pictures. I attended Northern Arizona University for three years while trying to get my bachelor’s in Social Work and I got the opportunity to travel with my partner for work. I did online schooling for part of my freshman year, my entire sophomore year, and part of my junior year, partially due to COVID-19 and also partially due to being 18 hours away from the university. I had spent a lot of time, tears, and hard work to get to where I did at that point and I decided to take a break. In December of 2021, I joked about started a photography business. Come Christmas morning I had a professional camera thanks to my wonderful and supportive partner. This is when finally picked up the camera again and started putting the work in! I reached out to people who were staying near us, watched countless YouTube videos, read so many blogs and forums, and took pictures every day to learn my camera, you name it. I did it. Since starting in January, I’ve learned so much, made so many friends, and I’m finally confident in my photos. Now I’ve still got a long way to go, but I’m so proud of myself for how far I’ve come!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was never easy. As I mentioned before, I was young and just doing it for fun. So, a lot of my time and focus was on school and sports. Photography was not even a thought, it wasn’t even in my mind until after I graduated high school, and even then, it didn’t come to be until I took a break from college this past December! Traveling and moving every few months also makes it hard. We’ve been anywhere from 5-18 hours from home in towns where we don’t know anyone. So, trying to build a portfolio and make those connections has been tough but not impossible. I’ve worked hard to get out of my comfort zone and make those connections, but I still continue to do so! Photography is a subjective art form and each photographer’s style differs. It’s beautiful, really. So, trying to make myself unique and find my style in places that are already filled with amazing, talented, and established photographers has also provided its challenges!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the photographer and owner of Piece of Heaven Photos! I dabble in a little bit of everything, families, couples, individual portraits, and maternity and newborns as I continue to narrow down my niche! I especially love to photograph couples and families. I feel that they have some of the best stories to tell and I absolutely love being able to capture that and portray it through their images. I love to capture those intimate and candid moments. I feel that a lot of photos we see may look posed, but I want my client’s images to be able to tell a story. Pictures are something that you should be able to look at and remember those moments, emotions, love, and happiness. To me, it should feel like you can touch those things just by looking at your images!

What does success mean to you?
Most people might see success as making a lot of money, being published in huge magazines, having your work plastered everywhere… but that is not how I see success. Success to me is knowing that I have provided beautiful images that will last a lifetime. It’s the overwhelming feeling I get after delivering a client’s gallery and seeing/hearing how much they love their pictures. It’s seeing them share their photos on their social media, changing their profile pictures, and sharing them to all their friends and family. Success is coming home from a session and knowing that I absolutely captured every beautiful moment, provided my clients with a session where they felt comfortable, beautiful, and overall excited and I am about give them those little moments captured through pictures, that they can cherish forever! That is success to me.
