Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Ferm.
Hi Alex, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2003. When I got out of art school, I had no idea what to do with my life! I only knew that making art was important to me and I continued to prioritize it even as I searched for ways to support myself.
After some false starts, I found a yoga studio and I was hooked. I became a yoga teacher. Teaching yoga quickly led me to an absolute fascination with the human body and how to heal its various woes. After several years of teaching yoga, I was looking for more understanding of anatomy and wanted to gain more tools for helping my clients. I was guided through conversations and my research at the Rolf Institute in 2013.
It was there that I learned that the human body can be so much more fluid and ready to heal than I had previously thought. Rolfing has given me more tools to help my clients and has broadened my understanding of my own body’s ability to heal. These days, I continue to create art, teach yoga, and have my Rolfing practice in Old Town Lafayette, CO.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a young person, I didn’t feel I fit into what I saw the other folks around me doing. In high school, I felt confident I was destined to be an artist, but once I was out of art school I didn’t how to make that a reality. I have had struggles with depression and anxiety for as long as I can remember.
What became my work was also my efforts to heal my mental and emotional pain through yoga, art and then Rolfing. In the process, I learned some pretty cool and simple approaches for healing in general, both mental/emotional and physical.
Thanks – So what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a yoga teacher and Rolfer, I help folks feel better in their bodies.
My work gives people a bit more resiliency to deal with the ups and downs of life and perhaps the ability to recover faster. I am talking about physical aches and pains and then all the other mental, emotional spiritual stuff that happens as well.
As an artist, I think my work offers a humorous and lively view of the world that can bring viewers some happiness and give a giggle.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love Denver. I love the food, the active lifestyle, and all the museums. So happy we have Meow Wolf here now!
I don’t like that my Google Maps crashes any time I am in Denver which causes me to drive in many circles.
