Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Newton
Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated from the University of Colorado at Denver with a degree in Guitar Performance and Recording Arts. Before moving to Colorado, I had the privilege of learning from incredible teachers who shaped me as a young musician. Later, I had the opportunity to study under renowned artists like G.E. Smith, Jorma Kaukonen, and Alex DeGrassi, each of whom left a lasting impact on my musical journey.
During my college years, I performed extensively around the Denver area—shoutout to Good Touch and Emma Mayes & the HIP for some of the best times! These days, I spend much of my time recording and collaborating with a wide range of artists, either in my home studio or at Side 3 Studios. Since launching my own studio in 2019, I’ve been producing and recording artists across genres, often playing guitar, bass, keys, or anything else the song calls for. I also have a pretty fun collection of instruments and microphones, which helps me create unique sonic textures. My goal as a producer is to build immersive musical worlds—drawing listeners in and making them feel something real.
Beyond the studio, I’m passionate about music education. I currently teach in the DPS school system through an amazing nonprofit called Music Bridge. My goal is to create a safe and inspiring space for students to learn and express themselves through music. I believe that no matter a person’s musical ability or aspirations, music has a place in everyone’s life. It’s a powerful tool for self-discovery and understanding the world around us. Through my work, I strive to equip both students and artists with the encouragement and knowledge to find where music fits into their lives.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been times that have been smooth and times that certainly haven’t! I had to learn some hard lessons when I was younger, but those experiences helped me commit fully to this path. I made the decision to go all in, giving everything I have to my craft and my vision. Every day, I focus on improving—not just as a musician, but in every aspect of my life, including my business and personal growth.
I’m incredibly grateful for my family and friends, who have been instrumental in helping me push through the struggles. At the same time, I carry a fire within me—a passion that drives me forward—and I strive to keep that shit burning no matter what.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Beyond teaching, recording and making music is my greatest passion. There’s nothing more exciting than bringing a song to life—the moment everything clicks is truly unmatched. It’s a feeling that never gets old.
I like to think I specialize not just in recording but in the full development of a song. Whether an artist brings me an idea they’ve already started or we’re building something entirely from scratch, my goal is to create a universe that listeners can step into. I take pride in crafting unique sounds and being a producer who deeply understands music, especially when it comes to melody development. I find a lot of joy in working closely with artists to get the melody just right—it’s one of the most rewarding parts of the process. You could say I’m an “all-in” kind of producer.
What I’m most proud of though, are the relationships I’ve built along this journey. Beyond growing as a musician, working one-on-one with so many different artists has helped me grow as a person. Collaboration can be challenging, but over the years, I’ve been fortunate to form strong, meaningful connections with the people I work with. That, to me, is just as rewarding as the music itself.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The ability to adapt is everything. In any given session, you never know what ideas will come up, and as a producer—especially if you’re leading the session—your job is to make sure every idea is heard and explored, no matter how wild it might seem. Honestly, sometimes the craziest ideas turn out to be the best ones. That’s why I believe in seeing every idea through before deciding if it works or not. Every idea deserves a chance.
