Today we’d like to introduce you to Amira Ababio.
Hi Amira, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A few years ago, while still in my twenties, my sister and I created a YouTube vlogging channel called The Ababio Girls. We ran the channel for a little over five years before we separated to explore other sides of our creativity. Video editing has always come natural to me and I love experimenting with creative edits from time to time.
Like many others, during the 2020 pandemic, I was stuck home thinking quite a bit about my next move in life. Everyone was on Instagram and everyone was sharing their daily experiences on the platform. Likewise, I started showcasing my love of plants and interior decorating. I’ve always had a love for both: my dad had plants and art all over the house when we were growing up and that is definitely what inspires the style in my home. Currently, I’ve stepped into the realm of motherhood. I have a six-month-old daughter who amazes me every day. I share my motherhood journey on my platform and have learned so much from so many parents out there!
I want to continue sharing the joys in my life, family, home, and plants for as long as I can. My dream is to turn my joys into a career. I am excited to continue evolving in my creative space and to see where this journey takes me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Although YouTube was fun, it was really hard to gain traction in the beginning. Working full time and creating is so hard to manage and the algorithm did not help either. My sister and I would vlog and put in so much effort and time creating videos, only for the reach on some of them to plummet. It definitely took a toll on us and whether we liked it or not, it affected our consistency. Maybe someday I’ll return to YouTube, but now, my focus is on sharing my creativity on Instagram. Instagram’s algorithm isn’t always promising, but it has not taken the fun out of sharing content with others. There are times where my photos and reels do not reach the numbers, I want it to, and other times where being a mother demands most of my attention, but I still push through because I love creating and sharing my joys with others.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In my creative space, I am a digital creator on Instagram. You can find me on @athomewithamira where I share all my joys in life. I am most proud of the home I have created for myself and my family. It’s been an absolute thrill watching myself evolve and becoming more confident in my niche. I think what sets me apart from others is that my home reflects my personality and not the trends or the norm. Many times, it’s difficult to interact with big creators with many followers, I love taking the time to reply comments and have conversation with people I have never met before. I have met amazing mothers and creatives on Instagram whom I feel like I know in real life! Engaging with my audience motivates me to continue creating, especially in times where I do not feel the best about my work.
What does success mean to you?
When you have reached a point in your life where your career does not feel like work but coexist with your joy in life. To me, that is the definition of success.
