Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Ingram.
Hi Andrew, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got my start as a writer and photographer as a public affairs specialist in the army. For this, and my many other sins, I became a stand up comedian in 2014 shortly after leaving active service. In the 11 years since I’ve performed comedy in most of the dive bars in Colorado Springs and a good number of others across the state and along the way I’ve managed to write two books (a collection short stories titled Midnight Thoughts and a novel called A Million Butterfly Wings) and take thousands of photos of fellow performers.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
That comes down to a matter of perspective I suppose. From a financial sense it’s been nothing but bumps. But over the years the work has gotten better and at the end of the day thats all that really matters to me. And the truth is making art is the part of my life that smooths out the bumps. Writing and performing helped and continues helping me process trauma and put positivity into a world I think could probably use it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have 3 main creative jobs, I’m a writer, comedian and photographer, in no particular order. It’s hard to tell what people know you for and often times it’s hard to explain to folks that sure you know me as a comedian but I’m actually formally trained as a photographer and a news reporter.
As a photographer I’m a great at one thing and that is shooting humans in motion especially in bad light. It’s what I learned to shoot in the army and it’s what I’ve continued to hone my skills doing at DIY performance spaces across the state.
I put journalism behind me but as fiction writer I stick to the things I’ve always loved science fiction, fantasy and horror. My goal is to write complex and thought provoking stories that are readable and exciting. If readers are to be believed I’ve accomplished that goal with my first two books and am really hoping to hit the mark with my third coming out later this year.
As a comedian I aim for surreal and darkly silly. It’s the thing I suppose most folks know me for because it’s a thing I do out in public several times a week. I host a weekly show at Bar-K in Colorado Springs and jump on any bill that will have me! I’ll even come perform in your living room the price will shock you!!!
How do you think about happiness?
Making art makes me happy. Writing stories or jokes. Getting a shot I know nobody else in the room would have gotten (photography is the closest I get to playing sports.) I like to work. I like to use my imagination, but I also like just hanging out with my girlfriend and goofing off, using my imagination that way. My cat makes me happy. Honestly eating a good meal with a person you like and petting a cat is a pretty solid way to spend your time.
