Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Dix.
Hi Andy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started drawing around 8 years ago looking to create something rare and unique in art, something interesting enough that I would buy. As a creative, I’m always looking for the next challenge. Making art is a constant challenge, and I took it head-on, collecting more inspirational photos than skills.
I was determined to be an artist, so I started watching videos and flipping through art books. I went and bought some watercolors and started to mess around. As I’ve evolved I’ve become a pretty good portrait artist after working in different mediums such as watercolor, fine liners, colored pencils, marker, and oil.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Drawing and making art wasn’t second nature to me, it took work. I loved the color but didn’t know how to use it in the right way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work in lots of different mediums but never mixed media. Watercolor was my first medium. I was drawing plants and painting them in watercolor, mixing colors and layering them to get different colors and textures. It was so much fun! I was always looking for more depth.
Then I found oil paint! Oh, oil how I love you! I love smooth blending, sharp edges, and the depth and richness in the color you get with oil paint. I like painting portraits of interesting people, with colorful hair, interesting features, and unique skin tones.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me as an artist is that I make art that I think is amazing with unique. The ability to transfer the images in my head to a canvas. I feel that it’s important to have something out there that expresses you as an individual.
My art community is really important to me. Having friendships with like-minded individuals and people on a similar journey that you can help and ask for help is my key to happiness. Good karma.
