Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Cochran.
Hi Ashley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always enjoyed baking but I never had something I really loved to make, so I tried a little bit of everything. A few years ago I tried to make royal icing cookies and failed miserably, but I tried again over the summer. I was still terrible at it, but I fell in love with the process of making them. I felt like I finally had something that could become a hobby. I practiced and watched videos and slowly got better. It sounded fun to make cookies for other people, so I started a website and shared it with my friends and family. I was terrified but was overwhelmed with how supportive everyone was. I’m so glad I did it because now I’m doing something I love to do.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My first cookies were terrible. I would make dozens and dozens of cookies and huge amounts of icing just to practice. I had bought all sorts of supplies and tools to bake, and I remember thinking that I invested so much into this and maybe it’s not something I can be good at. I made some cookies just for fun a few weeks later and I was so proud of them. It took a lot of practice to get there and now each time I make some I feel like I get a little bit better.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I bake and decorate custom royal icing cookies. Customers tell me a little about the event they have coming up, and I take their ideas and create sets of cookies tailored to them. It’s nice to be a part of their special day.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Growing up my parents worked in hotels together and I spent almost every non school day there. I would swim with my friends at the pool in the summer, and when they worked late I would get to hang out in a hotel room eating snacks and watching movies. We basically had free reign of the place and it was the coolest thing to experience as a kid.
