Today we’d like to introduce you to Aspen Cowan
Hi Aspen, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started making beeswax candles almost two years ago now. I realized that I couldn’t work for other people and sell my soul to the corporate world anymore. I am a self directed person, so being told what to do and when to do it just didn’t work for me.
I’m 3 years and 7 months sober and loving every minute of it. I spent around 10 years of my life on and off of doing drugs and drinking on the streets. I’m bipolar but wasn’t diagnosed until I turned 24 and it changed my life. I got into a really bad accident under the influence and decided to go to rehab when I was 24, and started my sobriety journey. It’s been no easy task and I still work on myself every single day.
Making and selling my candles has helped give me a direction and a purpose and I am so grateful for how far I’ve come with it and can’t wait to continue to grow my small business!
I’m honored to be featured and get my story out there. If I can change one life with my story, then I’ve been successful.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I grew up struggling with my identity for most of my adolescence and then into young adult life. Unfortunately I had some abusive situations growing up that changed me and made me grow up pretty fast. My parents did everything they could and were very kind and loving people, the problem wasn’t them it was more not being careful of the people they chose to let be around me/leave me with. In turn some terrible things happened that hardened me to the world. I started having manic episodes in 8th grade and struggled with my mental health issues a lot.
I’ve come to terms with many of the things that happened to me and have grown to be who I am today because of these things. I think in spite of the bad, I’ve become a pretty happy and kind individual and am proud of myself for letting a lot of the bad go!
I’m married and so in love, with a baby on the way. I wouldn’t change anything in my life, so why would I change my past?
I hope to continue to advocate for people with similar backgrounds as me and to love everyone I can while I’m here!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make all natural beeswax candles with mica powder for color. They are unscented but the mica powder is like what is in eyeshadow so it all sparkles when you burn it!
I make them in all kinds of shapes ranging from naked ladies to elephants and skulls. I think there’s a little something for everyone, and most people find on they want to take home when they see my setup. I think something that sets me aside are my color choices. I like to experiment with lots of fun layers and colors and that makes them all the more unique.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m a pretty open book.. so most people know a lot about me as soon as I open up and start talking. I suppose something some may not know is that my husband and I met when I was 18 and living on the streets. He took me traveling with him and we’ve hopped trains, hitchhiked across the country and now after our honeymoon gone all the way to Vietnam. I love to travel and find joy in the new and adventurous.
