Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Duke.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started out shooting outdoor sports—skiing, mountain biking, trail running—basically anything that let me be outside and around the energy of athletes and the natural world. That eventually led to opportunities with brands and events, and I built a career capturing fast, unscripted moments in dynamic environments.
Weddings came into the picture naturally. Friends started asking me to shoot theirs, and I realized I loved the storytelling side of it—the emotions, the relationships, the challenge of documenting a full day in a way that feels both real and artful. I approach weddings the same way I shoot in the mountains: with an eye for movement, authenticity, and the in-between moments.
Today, I split my time between outdoor work and weddings, often blending the two when couples choose to get married in wild places. I’m based in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, but my work has taken me all over—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
’s been a surprisingly smooth road. I was fortunate to have a lot of connections in the outdoor world before I started photography, which naturally opened doors early on. The real challenge was honing my skills. What I once thought was amazing work now feels pretty rough—it’s funny to see how much my standards have evolved over time. These days, I’m diving into architectural and interiors photography, which brings a whole new set of challenges that I find really exciting. I think the coolest part of this career is how it can keep evolving and stay fresh.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The bulk of my portfolio is rooted in the outdoor world—specifically skiing and mountain biking. I’m the resort photographer for Steamboat, which is a pretty awesome gig. I’ve also done a fair amount of video and documentary work, which adds another layer of versatility and helps set me apart from someone who focuses solely on photography or video. I’m comfortable across a range of styles and projects. You could say I’m a jack of all genres… and working on becoming a master. Ha!
What were you like growing up?
Oh jeez—let’s just say I wasn’t the most popular kid or the most naturally talented, but I definitely wanted to be. I’ve always been super competitive. I grew up in Steamboat Springs, ski racing with the Winter Sports Club. Just as I started getting fast—and gaining some peer respect (because that’s how Steamboat works)—I went off course into the trees and broke both tibias. That ended my ski racing career.
I went on to study at CU Boulder and ended up staying in the area for the next 25 years. During college, I got into cycling and took it pretty far—racing elite in Europe and going pro on the mountain bike circuit here in the States. Eventually, we had two kids and I stepped away from racing to focus on family.
I started a business selling used outdoor gear online, and somewhere along the way, I found photography—my dream job. These days, I’m remarried with a two-year-old, and we moved back to Steamboat a few years ago. We absolutely love being back in the mountains.
