Today we’d like to introduce you to Billie Groom.
Hi Billie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began over three decades ago by voluntarily fostering dogs, which led to having a dog rescue in North Carolina, It was not exactly a planned rescue lol Shortly later I started a pet care business in Toronto, It was very successful and I learned a lot about dog behavior, especially dogs over six months of age, and the challenges facing pet parents. I continued to work with rescued dogs for over six months. I never intended to be a dog behaviorist.
My goal was to develop a method that prevented behavioral surrender and euthanasia and abuse stemming from behavioral issues. The effectiveness of my method, which I later learned is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, led to my success as a behaviorist, and a leader in the canine behavior industry.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My one-on-one behavioral consulting (live and virtual) has been successful for over two decades and I appreciate the support I receive from my clients. The most common feedback I receive from clients is, “Why is your method not readily available? Why do my veterinarian, shelter, or previous trainer not know this method?”
Although I have made great strides in spreading awareness of Canine CBT, and many veterinarians and other industry experts support me, organizations and individuals who influence trainers and rescue organizations remain unwilling to provide their students and followers with the most up-to-date information and methods.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an innovator and a social entrepreneur. I am known for developing Canine Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, a methodology that addresses behaviors common among adolescent and adopted dogs, and ones associated with aggression and anxiety. I learned the method from working with hundreds of rescued dogs and it has saved the lives of thousands of dogs over 3 decades.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I not only work one on one with pet parents (virtual and live), but I also speak at conferences and collaborate with veterinarians, fosters, and other industry professionals. Canine CBT is proven effective in preventing behavioral euthanasia, decreasing surrenders, increasing successful adoptions, and eliminating aversive tools and methods. It is a win-win!
