Today we’d like to introduce you to Britta Deeds.
Hi Britta, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started beauty school in 2018 after deciding I wanted to wrap up my time in the restaurant industry. I have always loved art and I felt like nails would really interest me. Which they did! I started out in a salon environment and quickly realized that I wanted to create a space of my own for my clients. Since the beginning, offering a safe space for my clients has been my number one priority. I wanted Hi Fancy to be very inclusive and that will always be a so important to me. I moved to my own space this summer and it has been absolutely wonderful. I have an amazing client base. I love being surrounded by such special humans. They really lift me up and encourage me. My books are currently closed and I feel so fortunate to have so many wonderful people who want to hold hands with me! In the next year, I would like to focus on the next level for Hi Fancy. I would love to get into education. I had a really wonderful teacher, Andrea Haefele (IG: @atouchofnails) and she definitely inspires me.
I would also love to work more with individuals trying to get back on their feet. Having something as simple as getting your nails done can definitely help boost confidence. Now that I’ve established my business, community outreach is something I’d like to focus on.
I’m a very ambitious human and I’ll always want to push my brand to the next level. Being a small business owner has its challenges, but I am always learning and absolutely love what I do!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge for me is definitely being my own toughest critic. There is so much to learn in this industry. I always want to push myself, and know there is always more I can learn. Any chance for education makes me feel more confident in what I do. I always want to be the best.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a nail artist! I love abstract art. My favorite artist is Hilma Af Klint. I love the way she used shapes and colors and that absolutely inspires me. Nails are tiny little canvases and I love putting art on them, sometimes that is in the form of painted nail art and other times it’s building little structures with crystals and charms. I also love kawaii aesthetic. Who doesn’t love cute, pink, and sparkly?! The art is such a fun part of my job, but I also truly care about the health of my client’s nails. The structure is very important. The prep work before the art is actually one of my favorite parts. I mainly work on natural nails. I’m always so proud of my clients for the maintenance on their end. I apply the product, but they’re responsible for their claws for the 4 weeks between our appointments. It’s a level of respect to my art on their part which is really cool.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
In using social media, I found other nail artists who not only inspired me artistically but also had built successful businesses. Reaching out to these individuals helped me continue my education and growth as an artist but also gave me resources to grow my business.
