Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Rust.
Hi Brittany, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a heavy home, finding solace in anger and sexual addiction in my teen years. I was depressed and honestly, broken. But I use to tell myself, there has to be more than this—this can’t be it. And sure enough, at sixteen years old I found the answer I had been looking for in God. And within a few years, I saw the depression, anger, and sexual addiction lifted and freedom found!
From the moment I graduated high school (nineteen years ago…yikes!) I’ve had a passion to serve others in a way others were there for me. Primarily that looks like writing books and articles, traveling the country to speak at churches and conferences, and organizing events around the world for leaders to be refreshed before they abandon their own calling.
What really helped me most was consuming as many books as I could on faith, listening to others teach, and attending events. It’s because I saw my life so impacted via these avenues that I’m passionate about encouraging others through those same avenues.
In twenty years of ministry, I’ve had the honor to sit with so many people, whether in a hospital room, in the midst of life-altering tragedy, or simply in a coffee shop as they poured out their stories to me. And what I’ve observed is that we all have a story that involves some sort of pain or disappointment. If we can connect at that human level, we can find so much in common. It’s there I long to meet people and walk-through healing, with them, to find freedom in Christ!
I love being part of the Denver/Colorado Springs community! My husband and I grew up in Missouri but quickly moved to Colorado when we got married seven years ago. We now have a feisty toddler and a little in heaven, and this is where we’ve built our family. To be able to grow here, and serve the people of this community, is a true honor!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’m not sure anyone gets the smooth journey they’d prefer, but it’s in the tragedy and disappointment we grow the most. In fact, the hardest times of my life have produced the most beautiful.
I’ve faced betrayal by mentors I trusted, made my own fair share of mistakes with devasting consequences, and lost meaningful relationships. However, I’d say the most difficult was losing my child a few years back. I was already going through a really painful experience where someone I trusted betrayed me and it cost me a job I loved. Reeling from that pain, I found out I was pregnant and it was a beautiful ray of hope for my husband and me.
Our initial ultrasound went wonderful so I started planning our announcement photoshoot, pulled out my bin of maternity clothes from my first pregnancy, and ordered a pregnancy journal. I was ready for a new chapter!
But at ten weeks I miscarried our child, and two weeks later birthed our little one in the dark hours of the night in our bathroom, with my husband out of town. No words will express the pain of that experience.
But I can truly say God was evident in a way I’ve never experienced and He carried me through those dark days. I also had the most beautiful community around me! I can genuinely look back, now healed, and see intimacy and peace from God I’ve still never experienced. The fruit from that season is alive today as I minister to women around the world and have written a book for women who have lost a child.
Our trials can be the greatest producers of fruit and beauty.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I founded and lead a ministry called Truth and Grace Ministries. Our heart is to reach people all over the world with the same hope that changed my life. Primarily that looks like writing some things and speaking around the country. I also have some communities and courses on my website. One thing I’m passionate about is helping women to grow as a leader. I know how hard it can be, as a woman, to find her place in the workforce, and being in leadership for nearly twenty years, I’ve learned a ton that I’ve put into a whole resource for women.
My fifth book is published this July! It’s a book for parents to read with their young kids about God. But I’ve also written a book for pre-teen girls and several for adults.
I get emails from people all over the world (my reading plans have reached millions) and I’m truly humbled by each and every one. (Yes, I read all my emails!) But I received one a few weeks ago from an eleven-year-old girl who read my pre-teen book and she said it changed her life. It honestly doesn’t get much better than that!
Except one…my kid. There is nothing more meaningful than him and, in a heartbeat, I’d give up everything else for him. If you’re a parent I honestly believe there is no greater calling or investment than your kid(s). Am I a working mom? Yes. Do I love my job and believe it’s important? Absolutely. But no one will ever have a greater impact on who your kid becomes than you. Investing in one can make the biggest difference in the world!
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I absolutely love the diversity! Meeting so many interesting and genuinely lovely people is one of the best parts of what I do. Not to mention, as a foodie I’m obsessed with the culinary scene here. I have a running list of restaurants I want to try but it grows faster than I can keep up with it!
At least…do I even need to say? Traffic, Haha.
