Cam Rizai

Hi Cam, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey at PufCreativ, a pioneering digital marketing agency in the cannabis industry based in Denver, Colorado, is a testament to the power of mentorship, perseverance, and the ever-evolving landscape of digital marketing.

It all began during my sophomore year in college, in a class intriguingly titled “Business of Marijuana.” This class wasn’t just educational; it was a turning point. It was here that I first met John Shute, the CEO of PufCreativ, who came as a guest speaker. His insights and passion for the industry struck a chord with me, and I made it a point to keep in touch with him, a decision that eventually led me to ask for an internship at PufCreativ.

Starting as a Digital Marketing Intern in April 2020, my role involved creating engaging social media content, a challenge I relished. This period was marked by significant achievements, like increasing our client’s social media followers by 1,000 per month, indicating my growing understanding of the digital landscape in the cannabis sector.

John’s mentorship has been a cornerstone of my career. His guidance was not just about nurturing my professional skills but also about understanding the nuances and potential of the cannabis industry. This mentorship proved invaluable as I transitioned to the role of CRM & Sales Associate and Social Media Creative Lead in April 2021. Here, I built and managed our CRM program, drawing insights from data to drive our business goals, and took a more hands-on approach with clients, leading sales presentations and negotiations.

In January 2023, I stepped into the role of Business Development Manager, Sales and CRM. This role saw me deepening my involvement in strategizing and executing sales and marketing plans. John’s continuous mentorship was instrumental in helping me navigate and excel in these expanded responsibilities, fostering my skills in areas like contract negotiation, social media strategy, and comprehensive digital marketing.

My current role as Director of Sales and Business Development, which I assumed in September 2023, represents not just a career progression but the culmination of a journey that started with a guest lecture in college. It’s a role where I’m now driving the company’s growth, sourcing new clients, and managing key client relationships. This position is a blend of everything I’ve learned under John’s mentorship and my own experiences in the dynamic world of cannabis marketing.

Looking back, each phase of my career at PufCreativ has been a building block toward a deeper understanding of the cannabis industry and digital marketing. From an intern to a director, my journey has been shaped by the mentorship of John Shute and a steadfast commitment to growth and innovation in this unique and exciting field.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to where I am today at PufCreativ has been filled with its unique set of challenges and learning experiences, particularly accentuated by the onset of the pandemic. Starting my career just before this global crisis meant navigating uncharted waters, not just professionally, but also on a personal and mental level. The pandemic’s impact was profound, bringing about uncertainties that affected many people’s mental health and work-life balance.

One of the most significant struggles during this period was adapting to the rapidly changing landscape of the digital marketing industry, especially in the cannabis sector, which was itself undergoing considerable transformation. The need to be agile and responsive to these changes, while ensuring that our client’s needs were met, was a constant challenge.

However, the company culture at PufCreativ, led by John Shute, played a pivotal role in how we as a team weathered these challenges. John’s decision not to lay off any staff during the pandemic was more than a business decision; it was a statement of trust and support to the entire team. This approach fostered a sense of unity and collective resilience among us. It reinforced the idea that we were not just colleagues but a community that could rely on each other in times of adversity.

Moreover, John’s understanding and flexibility in giving people time off to be with their families during the pandemic was invaluable. It was a gesture that acknowledged the human aspect of our team, respecting and supporting our needs beyond the professional sphere. This empathy and solidarity were crucial in keeping the team’s morale high and maintaining a productive work environment despite the external challenges.

In retrospect, while the road has not always been smooth, the struggles along the way have been instrumental in strengthening our team and refining our approach to digital marketing. The experience of navigating the pandemic at PufCreativ has taught us the importance of adaptability, empathy, and maintaining a strong company culture, which I believe are key factors in our sustained success and growth in the industry.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As the Director of Sales and Business Development at PufCreativ, my role is multifaceted and constantly evolving, reflecting the dynamic nature of the cannabis industry and the digital marketing landscape. My responsibilities range from managing our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to leading qualifications, crafting compelling sales pitches, and developing thorough proposals and pitch materials. I also play a key role in creating case studies, establishing sales protocols, and building new service offerings that align with our clients’ evolving needs.

What I specialize in, and what I am known for, is my ability to bridge the gap between a cannabis company’s vision and the digital marketing strategies that can bring that vision to life. My comprehensive approach involves not just selling a service but understanding and anticipating the unique needs of each client, ensuring their success through tailored digital marketing solutions.

One aspect of my work that I take great pride in is client success. It’s not just about closing a deal but about forging lasting relationships and seeing our clients thrive as a result of our collaborative efforts. This client-centric approach is grounded in a deep understanding of the cannabis industry and the digital marketing tactics that resonate most within this space.

What sets me apart is my business acumen, specifically tailored to the cannabis industry. Having been deeply immersed in this field, I have developed a keen sense of what it takes for a cannabis company to elevate its digital marketing presence. This industry-specific insight, combined with my comprehensive skill set in sales and business development, positions me uniquely to guide our clients toward impactful and innovative digital marketing strategies.

In sum, my role at PufCreativ is about much more than sales and business development. It’s about being a strategic partner to our clients, helping them navigate the complex digital landscape, and ensuring that their marketing efforts yield tangible, successful results. It’s this commitment to client success and industry-specific expertise that differentiates me in the digital marketing realm, especially within the cannabis industry.

What makes you happy?
What truly makes me happy is the time I spend with my loved ones, my friends, and my Bernese Mountain dog, Nugget. There’s a unique comfort and joy in being surrounded by those who understand and support you, and Nugget adds a special kind of joy and companionship to my life. These moments, whether simple or grand, are the ones that recharge me and provide a sense of balance and fulfillment beyond my professional achievements.

Additionally, I have a deep passion for traveling and immersing myself in nature. Living in Colorado, I’m fortunate to have the majestic Rocky Mountains as my backyard, offering endless opportunities for hiking and skiing. These activities not only provide a physical challenge but also a mental respite. Being in nature, especially in the Rockies, allows me to disconnect from the fast-paced digital world and reconnect with the natural world. It’s in these moments, whether I’m trailing a path in the summer or skiing down a slope in the winter, that I find a profound sense of peace and happiness.

This connection to nature and the time spent with those I care about are essential to who I am. They remind me of the beauty and simplicity of life outside of work, grounding me and giving me a perspective that I bring back to my professional life. It’s this balance between personal joy and professional fulfillment that keeps me motivated and happy.
