Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Hamilton.
Hi Cameron, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’m a Colorado native. I grew up in Boulder and moved to Denver in high school. Growing up I was always encouraged to experience as much as possible. To enjoy music, art, sports, different cultures, and above all else stay open and always be curious. I didn’t feel like I fit into one scene until I found the salon community.
I found myself at Emily Griffith in downtown Denver where I got my cosmetology license and began my journey as a hairstylist. I never anticipated that my passion for self-expression and joy of connecting with people would have become such a fulfilling, successful career 18 years later! I am constantly evolving my craft as well as educating my fellow stylists. I recently became a signature stylist for ORIBE and adore working with them.
My heart is being behind the chair. I find purpose in being of service and creating a safe space where people can explore their hair dreams. Because of my extensive education and experience, I can provide custom colors and cuts that are very personalized to my client’s style. I attribute my success to always being curious, staying present, putting in the work, and my love of relentless, authentic self-expression!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I started out working 10 to 12-hour days for not a lot of money as well as working other jobs at night or my days off. While it was tiring I knew that’s where I wanted to be. The education I got from my fellow stylists, mentors, and clients during my early days has been more valuable in my career than any amount of money.
The most challenging thing is learning to put your ego aside and keep your self-esteem intact. It is an invaluable practice that I am forever grateful to have learned with the support of my salon communities.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
There is nothing better to me than the perfect color. I have really excelled at all things redheads, bright and beachy blondes, classic brunettes, fashion colors, and everything in between. I am drawn to the unexpected and have a deep appreciation for the classics. I am known for always having ideas and never getting stagnant or repetitive even with long-term clients. I never just do the same thing to everyone.
What sets me apart is I really take into consideration my client’s lifestyle, budget, time (I will not keep you for 5 hours unless it’s absolutely necessary), and short-term and long-term hair goals. I believe in open and honest communication and always come from a creative place of understanding and collaboration with my clients.
Networking and finding a mentor can have a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I recommend assisting for at least a year before you are on the floor. I would find a place where you get to work with a lot of different stylists so you can have as many different experiences as possible. Find a salon that when you walk in feels exciting and comfortable. Always go above and beyond and clearly communicate your expectations.
