Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris O’Neill
Hi Chris, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My primary job is as a wealth advisor, where I manage clients’ financial portfolios. However, I’ve always had a strong creative side. Over the years, I’ve dabbled in various artistic ventures—from creating my own hot sauce brand to painting and even restoring cars. One day, while on a trip to Jackson Hole, I came across a beautiful buffalo skull that caught my eye. I’d seen some incredible examples of gold leafing in the area, which sparked an idea in me.
When I returned home, I decided to try my hand at gold leafing the buffalo skull. It became a striking piece, so I hung it behind my desk at the office. One of my clients came in for a meeting and immediately noticed the skull. He asked if it was for sale, and without giving it much thought, I replied, ‘YES!!’ That led to my very first sale as an artist, and it felt incredibly rewarding to see my creativity appreciated in that way. It was exciting to know that someone valued my work enough to buy it, and it made me feel more confident in pursuing my artistic endeavors.
I grew up in Miami, a place known for its vibrant beaches, but my heart was always drawn to the vast, open skies of the West. This led me to move to California and Colorado, where I immersed myself in the beauty of the mountains and the wildlife that inhabit them. Although I wasn’t drawn to hunting, I found a deep appreciation for these creatures and felt compelled to celebrate their lives through art.
In college, I majored in Environmental Studies, focusing on the conservation and preservation of wild spaces, which further fueled my desire to honor the natural world through my creative practice. Over time, my artwork has evolved to incorporate wildlife imagery, using gold leaf and other precious metals in a way that’s rarely seen. Traditionally used in architecture and fine frames, gold leaf adds a layer of elegance and reverence to my subjects, creating a striking contrast between the fleeting lives of animals and the timeless beauty of the materials.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One aspect of my journey that has really highlighted my resilience is the way my work challenges traditional views of animal imagery. For centuries, animal skulls have often been displayed as “trophy” pieces, symbolizing a hunter’s conquest. However, my approach is quite different. I use these symbols to celebrate the beauty and life of wild creatures, rather than to focus on death or domination.
When I first began creating this type of artwork, I encountered resistance. Not everyone is open to having animal skulls in their home—many associate them with darkness or death. It was a challenge to shift that perspective, but I was determined to stay true to my mission: to honor these animals in a way that’s uplifting, not morbid.
I’ve worked hard to educate my audience about my intent—showing them that the pieces are not trophies, but celebrations of life and nature. Over time, this education and the emotional depth behind my work have allowed people to see it differently, and I’ve had the rewarding experience of seeing someone’s perception change. What started as a challenge has become an opportunity to engage people in meaningful dialogue about art, nature, and respect for wildlife.
This shift in perspective, and the persistence it required, has been a powerful part of my artistic journey. It’s proof that with dedication and a clear sense of purpose, it’s possible to change minds and open hearts.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in gilding authentic animal skulls with precious metals, a process that transforms them into intricate, one-of-a-kind pieces of art. What I’m most proud of is the delicate use of this challenging medium—each piece requires precision and care, and the results are always worth the effort. My work explores the intersection of nature, artistry, and preservation, using gold leaf and other precious metals to elevate these often-overlooked objects into something timeless and meaningful.
One of the most gratifying moments for me is when people see my work for the first time and say, “Wow, I’ve never seen anything like this before.” It lets me know that I’m creating something that resonates not just visually, but emotionally as well. What sets me apart is my ability to blend the natural world with luxury materials in a way that honors the animals I depict. My art isn’t just about showcasing wildlife; it’s about celebrating their lives and preserving their essence through a thoughtful, respectful lens.
I want potential clients to understand that my art is more than just decoration—it’s a reflection of my passion for the natural world and a commitment to celebrating it with reverence. Each piece tells a story, inviting the viewer to pause, reflect, and connect with something greater than themselves. My work is an invitation to explore the beauty of nature and its creatures, and to find meaning and inspiration in their presence.
What does success mean to you?
For me, success is not solely about recognition or financial gain, but about the meaningful connection my work creates with others. When I see someone truly moved by my art—whether it’s the intricate details or the message behind it—I feel a sense of accomplishment. Success, in my eyes, is when my art goes beyond being just a visual piece and becomes something that sparks reflection, conversation, and a deeper understanding of nature and its preservation.
Additionally, success is about staying true to my craft and continually pushing myself to grow as an artist. The challenge of gilding animal skulls with precious metals is intricate and requires constant learning and refining of my technique. The process itself is rewarding, and knowing that I’m evolving as an artist while maintaining my commitment to celebrating the natural world is what defines success for me.
Ultimately, success is a balance between personal fulfillment in my work, the positive impact it has on others, and the ongoing journey of growth and exploration in my art.
