Conversations with Chris Waters

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Waters

Hi Chris , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin outside of Milwaukee. I was a pretty shy kid, but once I was introduced to alcohol, I really came out of my shell. That lead to a lot of partying, and most of the time I would be singing, or rapping, doing movie quotes, or acting a fool while doing so. This was kind of the foundation for what was to come. I was living in Denver in 2002, and was laid off from my job. I moved out to San Diego, with an interest in getting into acting. I finally got started around 2009 in San Diego and landed a couple of agents and ended up moving to L.A in 2010 to pursue acting more seriously. I landed roles here and there and was really passionate about it, and I did that for a decade, up until 2020. During that time I worked with Patrick Wilson, Brooklyn Decker, Joe Carnahan, Rob Schneider, Nate Parker amongst others. I shot some really cool commercial projects, and did some theater as well. Music was my other love, and around 2016, I started exploring that a little further. I also got sober in 2016, and that was a monumental choice that would shape my future. I ended up releasing an EP called “Rise” as a solo artist in 2018. It was around that time, that music stared becoming a bigger passion, and acting started to take a back seat. To be honest, I was just burned out by the acting thing. The auditions, the traffic, the rejection… after awhile. it just took its toll. I also kinda hated Los Angeles if I’m being honest. I spent the pandemic in Austin, TX continuing to work on writing, creating, and releasing music, and made it back to Denver in 2022. Today, music is definitely my main interest and passion. I’m a singer/ songwriter/ rapper and I am also a DJ as well as a playlist curator. I am also just now starting a new record label called “Deep Waters,” which is going to be emotional, melodic, and chill house music. What really interesting to me is that my entire music catalog came out after getting sober in 2016. I really feel like getting sober lead me down the path to where I really should be, and for me that’s been music. I encourage others to “throw some darts at the dart board” (stole that one from Will Ferrell) to explore your interests and passions until you eventually find that one passion that steals your heart.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No! Pursuing acting and music has been great, but it definitely doesn’t pay the bills. I have always had to try to find a balance between working a “real” job while trying to pursue these creative pursuits at the same time. I have spent my life in sales, acting, and music. The amount of rejection I have endured is off the charts. I mean you wouldn’t believe it, but in a weird way it’s made be invincible at this point, where now any sort of rejection rolls off my back. I also had to deal with a fairly addictive personality, and luckily, I managed to get sober. That really set me straight, and helped me to get dialed in with my passions and what I really wanted to do.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I will just stick to music for this section. I am a singer/ songwriter/ rapper/ DJ/ Playlist curator, and soon to be record label owner. My purpose is to touch as many lives as possible through my music. What sets me apart is that I have no limits as far as creativity or genres go. I make the music I want to make, when I want to make it. I have done everything completely independently with no manager/ no record label, and really no help (other than some great producers I have worked with). If you check out my music, you will hear pop. rap, folk, hip hop, acoustic, electronic, and deep house. I feel that I’ve got a little something for everyone depending on your own personal tastes. If you’re a fan of deep/ melodic/ chill house, I feel like I curate one of the best playlists on Spotify for that type of music, and also make “”Deep Waters” mixes on Soundcloud in this genre that a lot of people love. Getting support on my music from people in many different countries all over the globe has been such a blessing.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Probably that comedy is another passion of mine. I have done stand up comedy at The Comedy Store in LA and other venues around LA. I did improv at Second City and The Groundlings in LA. And I do many, many celebrity impressions (some better than others)
