Conversations with Cody Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Davis.

Cody, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It was June of 2024, Deadpool and Wolverine was coming out in a couple of months, and FanExpo Denver was happening at the beginning of July. My girlfriend and I were kind of recluses and didn’t really know anyone in the area so we were just going to go by ourselves. We had a few costume ideas in mind, but with the new movie on the horizon, I knew two that I really wanted to pull off. Deadpool was my favorite of the two back then, but only the Wolverine costume came in on time, the day before the convention. Well after trying it on, I knew that it had to be my day one costume. I ran into a Blade cosplayer and decided to get a picture, then a certain Deadpool cosplayer by the name of Jeetspool decided to jump in and get pictures with us. He gave me a card and told me that he had remade a song from the Barbie movie into a song about Deadpool called I’m Just Wade, so I gave it a listen, and him a follow.

A few months later, I saw that he, Front Range Dinosaurs, and Thatman, a local Batman cosplayer, were getting together for some events, I left a comment on an Instagram post saying that it looked fun and that I’d love to do something like that sometime. Jeetspool told me to suit up and join the next one, and suddenly I found myself at a Habitat for Humanity, with some cosplayers that I had looked up to since I moved here. I went to a few events after that, and eventually met and joined a local Star Wars cosplay group.

I did a lot of events with them and had a lot of fun, I met a lot of really good people who are now great friends of mine, and who helped me get to a great place in my life. Unfortunately though, Star Wars wasn’t where my passion truly was, and I started to feel like I didn’t belong. So I left and decided to go back to the character this all began with.

I contacted Jeetspool and we started going to more events together. We did a couple of conventions, then linked back up with Front Range Dinosaurs, Thatman, and that Blade cosplayer from FanExpo who now went by 303 Daywalker. Together we formed the Mile High Multiverse, a cosplay group dedicated to bringing joy and amazement to people who need it. We do all sorts of events from awareness walks and parades, to birthdays and weddings, and everything in between. If you want to add an extra flair to your event, we have your back.

I now consider myself lucky to be a part of a chosen family of beautiful people, who are willing to go above and beyond to provide happiness, entertainment, and whimsy to the communities of Colorado by bringing their favorite heroes to life. A family of Heroes, who dress up as Heroes.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been mostly smooth. I’d say that anything comes with its trial and error. Being a part of a cosplay group in a fandom that I wasn’t really a big part of anymore was a bit of a hurdle, but on the flipside of that, I probably wouldn’t be where I am without the experience and connections gained from those months. I think the biggest struggle in any journey like this is getting started, but it always seems more intimidating than it really is.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a crafter at heart. I love working with my hands and making cool props to show and play with. I specialize in foam crafting, but I use all sorts of mediums. I started doing cosplay because dressing up and going to conventions seemed fun, so now I’ve kind of put the two together and started crafting to improve my costumes. Since I put as much time as I do into the cosplay group, it makes it very convenient that what I’ve always loved doing in creating art, can elevate what we do. As proud as I may be of my helmets and props, and I am very proud of those things, I think I’m the most proud of what me and my friends have created together with the Mile High Multiverse. When I see the glow on people’s faces when they see us walk around the corner, I don’t know if anything could make me more proud than what we’ve brought together.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Just start, keep going, and find your people. One of the scariest things about doing anything you love to do, is taking the first step. Once you do that, there will always be moments when you think that you should turn back, but keep on the path, especially if you know deep down that it’s the right path for you. Then once you’ve found your people, they’ll reinforce what you already know, that you’re in the place you need to be. The main thing I wish I had known back when I first started is that no one is paying attention to the tiny details. They see a person in a costume they like, and they love it. Don’t sit there and worry or stress yourself out about the minor things that no one will notice, just have fun with it and enjoy yourself. Lastly, don’t ever let budget or skill hold you back, do what you love and find a way to make it work for you. Some of my favorite cosplays and artworks I’ve seen come from creativity and innovation in the face of adversity. So keep going, find a way, and remember that you got this, people are gonna love it!
