Conversations with Comlan Dick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Comlan Dick.

Hi Comlan , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Rius is a Togolese artist living in the United States. Rius was inspired by the journey of the artist’s mother, Ablavi. Ablavi moved from the village to the big city at a young age with dreams of improving herself, helping others, and giving her children a better life than she had. Without her, there would be no Rius.

Rius grew up in the hustle and bustle of Lomé where survival dictates that everyone is an entrepreneur. To hone his craft, Rius spent five years as an apprentice tapissier, where he learned about sewing, design, textiles, and how to build things to last. During his years as an apprentice, he needed to feed himself, so he also worked another full-time job at night. However, Rius always made time to dream up creations and develop his artistic talents. After moving to the U.S., Rius worked a few jobs and his dreams never died. Rius realized that his motivation and creative capacity were limited working for others who only wanted to exploit and capitalize on his talents without crediting him, paying him properly, or allowing him free range as an artist.

Rius is a source of inspiration for everyone who has felt stifled. That is why Rius Creations will give people the confidence to take charge of their destiny no matter what restrictions others try to impose upon them.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey for Rius has included very real struggles and moments of deep resilience. Immigrating to the United States meant starting over in almost every way, from learning a new language to navigating unfamiliar systems. Every step required patience, adaptability, and a willingness to grow. Adjusting to new laws, business practices, and cultural expectations added layers of complexity, but these challenges also shaped Rius into a brand rooted in perseverance and intentional craftsmanship. What began as a personal transition into a new country has evolved into a commitment to building something meaningful, proving that obstacles can become the foundation of a greater vision.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am known for creating thoughtfully designed, high quality bags that bring together versatility, durability, and cultural heritage. What sets me apart is my commitment to intentional craftsmanship and meaningful design. RIUS bags are more than accessories. They are made to be functional, long lasting, and inclusive for all people in many parts of their daily lives.

I specialize in designing bags for everyone that do not follow trends but instead blend practicality with story. Each collection, including those that feature traditional fabrics from the Ewe people, reflects a dedication to quality, purpose, and respect for heritage.

In short, I do not simply make bags. I create functional and versatile pieces that carry character, purpose, and authenticity.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
One of the best ways to find a mentor or to build a strong network is to stay open, curious, and willing to show up in new spaces. Mentorship often begins with simple conversations, so attending local business events, creative meetups, or cultural gatherings can be a powerful way to make connections. Sharing your work, your goals, and your story helps people understand who you are and what you value, which makes it easier for the right relationships to form. I have learned that networking is most effective when approached with authenticity and a genuine interest in others rather than pressure or expectation.

I will be honest that networking in the United States has been a real challenge for me. I do not have a mentor and I have only a few professional connections. Immigrating to a new country while learning a new language and navigating new customs has made it difficult to build the kind of support network many entrepreneurs rely on. Still, I remain open to connecting with others, learning from people who have more experience, and finding mentors who understand the vision behind RIUS. I am hopeful that with time, continued effort, and genuine relationships, the right community will grow around me and my work.
