Today we’d like to introduce you to D-town Denver’s #1 Over-30 Boy Band
Hi D-TOWN, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We’re five performers who first met through Denver’s thriving theatre scene—one of the best in the country, if we do say so ourselves. It’s an incredible place to find like-minded artists who share a passion for performance, comedy, and, apparently, deeply unserious career decisions.
Like many kids who grew up in the ‘90s and early 2000s, we were shaped by the boy band era. If you were a young boy at the time, you either loved boy bands (but kept it a secret), hated them (while inexplicably knowing every lyric), or dreamed of being in one yourself. We fell into that last category.
So naturally, the idea of forming a boy band in our 30s—well past the industry’s typical expiration date—felt both ridiculous and strangely inevitable. Every time we joked about it, people actually loved the concept. Eventually, we realized that maybe, just maybe, audiences would actually pay to see a group of grown men reliving their unfulfilled pop star dreams. And just like that, D-TOWN was born.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As actors we usually only have to focus on one thing during a theatre contract, and that’s our performance. There’s a whole team of professionals to take care of everything else that goes into putting on a show.
So the most difficult part of this process has been coming to terms with the fact that when it comes to D-TOWN, we aren’t just actors. We’re directing, writing, producing, booking venues, setting up interviews, managing the schedule etc, all by ourselves. So learning new skills and still being able to make time for rehearsing the show itself has been a bigger undertaking than I think any of us were prepared for at first.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In terms of our show, I think we already set ourselves apart from any other band in town. While other groups may perform the odd boy band number from time to time, there’s no other group in the Denver area that performs boy band numbers exclusively with full choreography while also comedically nodding to the fact that we know we’re “too old” to be starting a boy band. It’s part concert, part comedy show.
The original idea was always to come at this project winking at the joke. We know we’re in our 30’s and may not be as good as a group of teenagers doing the same thing. That’s what’s funny about it. But the more we rehearsed and the more people saw what we could do, we realized we’re not half bad! There’s only so long you can put five guys in a room together and make them harmonize pop songs before they start to blend and sound really good together.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
While we’ve made a few special appearances at fundraisers and cabarets, we’re now gearing up for our biggest event yet—our first full-length, fully produced concert! Join us on March 6th at The People’s Building in Aurora, CO for a night of nostalgia, comedy, and questionable dance moves.
We’ll be performing all the boy band classics you know and love, along with some unforgettable one-hit wonders and a few deep cuts you didn’t know you needed in your life. Plus, we’ll be giving the audience an exclusive sneak peek at our upcoming documentary, Becoming D-TOWN—a comedic behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to assemble a boy band… in your 30s.
So grab your tickets now—because trust us, this is one show you don’t want to miss.
