Conversations with Daniel Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Johnson.

Hi Daniel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started in 2013 when a friend brought some turntables to a house party that we were throwing and I got my first taste of spinning records. From there I got Abelton and took the next seven years of my life learning on my own and saving up money to go to music production school. Fast forward and now I have graduated from KMG here in Denver and I am on track to graduate from ICON Collective Online music production school as well. I Fell in love with the process of making music and I haven’t wanted to do anything else but make music hardly. Nowadays I spend my time with school and doing mixing and mastering services for other producers. I have never had anything else in my life make me feel the way that creating music does it has saved my life and given me purpose like nothing else has!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not the smoothest road as I wasn’t able to afford school in the normal way I had to work jobs away from home and family in order to save up the money to be able to go to production school and audio engineering school. working hitch work also made it hard to really get into the music scene here in Denver during that time as well because I was always working out of state. Now however I am currently home full time and now I am starting to finally achieve my goals of playing shows in Denver and making new friends along the way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in Bass music and audio engineering. Something that sets me apart is my sound design and being able to get clean mixes and masters. I don’t fall for the loudness war because streaming sites normalize your music volumes anyways so there is no point. Also being affordable and working with customers to get mixes and masters that they like through the use of reference tracks. Also being able to hear frequency imbalances and other things that most people don’t even pay attention too. Almost ten years of doing this and the experience of it all has positioned me in a place where I have only dreamed about not even just 1 year ago.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
1. Turn every knob in your DAW really listen to what it does and over time you will be able to hear things in tracks that you like and you will be able to recreate something similar.

2. Make music daily in some form you don’t have to complete a song a day but at least an idea that way at the end of the month you can pick your favorites and turn them into songs.

3. If something seems really complicated chances are it’s not really you just need to break it down and go one step at a time.

4. Your favorite artist all started out the same way you did not know anything. The only difference between you and them is the time and effort that they put into learning. You’ll get there just keep your head down and focus on your dreams.
