Today we’d like to introduce you to Darby Murphy-Beard.
Hi Darby, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am an accomplished and passionate eventing trainer and coach based in Cheyenne, Wyoming. With a rich and diverse background in equestrian education, I have dedicated my life to the art and science of horsemanship. My journey began at an early age through the United States Pony Club (USPC) in 2005, where I quickly developed a love for the organization and the sport of Eventing. Growing up, I competed extensively across Area IX and participated at national levels in multiple USPC and other Championship competitions in Eventing and Show Jumping. I learned the fundamentals of riding from my mother, Allison Deveraux Murphy, whose mentorship instilled a deep love and respect for the sport.
Early in my career, I earned my HB certification through the USPC and Level 4 certification through the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA). I later advanced to become a Visiting Instructor, traveling extensively to conduct riding and horse management clinics across the United States, including in Alaska, Montana, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Texas, Colorado, and California. My commitment to education shines through my engaging instruction style and my ability to adapt to each rider’s individual needs.
I am continually dedicated to elevating my teaching skills and supporting the growth of others within the equestrian community. Currently, I am pursuing further certification through the Eventing Coaches Program (ECP) to deepen my expertise in the sport. My diverse experience spans disciplines including Eventing, Hunter Jumpers, Western riding, and more—enabling me to connect with and inspire students of all ages and skill levels. My teaching philosophy emphasizes building confidence, developing effective communication with horses, and fostering a lifelong love for riding. I also continue to train and compete with client and personal horses in Wyoming and Colorado.
I am fortunate to be married to Jace Beard, an exceptional horseman, trainer, and colt starter. His knowledge and passion for horses have profoundly contributed to my growth and understanding of young horses.
In addition to coaching, I have played a vital role in the development of The Event at Archer in Cheyenne, Wyoming, serving as Safety Coordinator and on our founding Board. My efforts contributed to establishing its reputation as a premier competition. My dedication to creating a safe, inclusive, and educational environment has helped this event flourish as a highlight of the regional eventing calendar.
My unwavering passion for equestrian education, versatility, and professionalism continues to inspire and empower my students. My commitment to the sport and my community reflects my deep-rooted love of horses and my ongoing pursuit of excellence in horsemanship.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Owning and competing with horses always comes with its fair share of struggles, and that’s something I know all too well. Two years ago, my young horse Fergie bucked me off while schooling cross country with a friend, resulting in a severe concussion, my worst fall to date. I have no recollection of the fall or the day, and I ended up in the hospital, needing an entire week off work to recover at home. I was unable to ride or teach for over a month.
Not only was it a serious blow to my brain and body, but it also deeply affected my confidence. As professionals, we are expected to be examples, show no fear, and lead with courage. I kept asking myself, “How can I be the trainer my clients look up to if I am afraid of my horse?” It was incredibly painful and difficult to admit.
However, over time, I came to realize that the fall did not mean I was a bad rider, trainer, or coach. I began to see that setbacks and falls are simply part of the territory, learning opportunities that can make us better. In some way, I am actually grateful for the experience, as it taught me resilience, humility, and the importance of patience and self-care.
I spent months rehabbing both myself and Fergie, making sure we were both fit and strong enough to move forward. I vividly remember the first time I got back on him—my hands trembling, tears streaming down my face. But thanks to the unwavering support of my husband, family, clients, and coaches, I was able to work through my fears, rebuild my confidence, and become a stronger, more resilient rider.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an eventing trainer and coach based in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I specialize in guiding riders of all levels, from beginners to advanced, through the disciplines of eventing, hunter jumpers, Western riding, and more. My focus is on building confidence, developing effective communication between rider and horse, and fostering a lifelong love for riding. I also have extensive experience in horse management and safety, which I incorporate into my coaching to ensure well-rounded, competent riders.
I am known for my dedication to horsemanship, versatility across disciplines, and my passion for education. I am recognized within my community and beyond for creating a supportive and inclusive environment where riders feel empowered and motivated to reach their goals. I’m also known for my resilience, personally overcoming challenges, setbacks, and fears, and using those experiences to inspire my students.
I am most proud of my growth through adversity. When I suffered a severe fall that resulted in a concussion and shook my confidence. I worked tirelessly to rehab both myself and my horse, and I emerged from it stronger and more resilient. I take pride in my ability to help my students and clients work through their fears and insecurities, guiding them to become not only better horsemen but also more confident, empowered individuals. Horses are mirrors of ourselves; the more we understand that, the better advocates we can become for ourselves, our horses, and everyone around us.
What sets me apart is my holistic approach to horsemanship, combined with my versatility across disciplines and my genuine commitment to my students’ growth, both technically and personally. I am deeply dedicated to ongoing learning; I am actively pursuing additional certifications, including the Eventing Coaches Program, and I continue to ride with others beyond my current knowledge to deepen my expertise as a trainer and rider. I also bring a compassionate understanding that setbacks and fears are natural parts of the journey. I use my own experiences to connect with and motivate my riders, always aiming to nurture confidence, promote safety, and foster a love for the sport. My goal is to create a positive, empowering environment where every rider can thrive and enjoy the process of becoming the best version of themselves, on and off the horse.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I have been incredibly fortunate to have experienced both mentorship and opportunities to grow as a mentor myself. Growing up, my local trainers taught me so much about myself and the trainer I aspired to become. In 2018, I was given the incredible opportunity to ride under the guidance of Allyson Hartenburg and Jennifer Woten, something I will always be deeply grateful for.
My advice to young professionals is to never stop learning. Put yourself out there—join clubs and organizations, ask for help, and remain open to constructive criticism. Be willing to work hard, but don’t water yourself down to fit into a perceived “right” mold. The equestrian world is demanding; it isn’t an easy sport. However, with the right guidance and knowledge, so many doors will open for you. Stay committed, keep learning, and you’ll find your path.
