Conversations with Datta Groover

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Datta Groover.

Hi Datta, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My background is in engineering, but that was never my greatest love. I have worked on million-dollar projects on five continents.

While I enjoyed that, my goal has always been to make a difference in the lives of others. I moved away from engineering and into speaking and writing because I believe I can make a greater difference and teach others how to do the same. My goal in life is to help people find their highest and best selves, and writing and speaking are powerful ways to do that.

I have taught speaking and writing for years (even when I was still active as an engineer) and have found it profoundly fulfilling. I have taught those skills in middle school through university level and in adult education. What I enjoy most about my teaching experience is students who come back years later and say I made a difference in their lives.

I strive to be the best writer I can be and always look for ways to improve. That is fulfilling, but not as much as it is to help others find their way.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For any writer to be successful, they have to be willing to take criticism. I believe that’s always a challenge, which has been so in my case. I might get 20 positive reviews from the biggest review companies in the world, and I get one negative review on Amazon, and that’s what I pay attention to.

While it is a challenge, it is a necessary part of the business. Another big challenge has been the balance between writing what I love and writing what agents and publishers want to buy.

As a screenwriter, my greatest challenge was that you work hard for a great idea, and then it winds up in a basket of options and might sit in a stack for many years until somebody decides to take what you’ve written and rewrite it and maybe make it into a movie. I did not enjoy the business at all.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a writer and a speaker, and I train people in those two worlds. As a trainer, I am known for unorthodox methods and ruffling feathers.

While I don’t do that intentionally, my methods sometimes lead to that and make a lot of difference in people’s lives. I’m totally fine with the trade-off there.

So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why.
What matters to me most is making a difference in the lives of others. I believe that all human beings are wired that way, though many people are not aware of it. That right there is a pretty big “why.”
