Today we’d like to introduce you to David Lambert.
Hi David, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Allwell Rents is the Lambert family business we developed to provide excellent customer service. We sold our medical equipment business and started looking for a new industry to work in. We had a rental department in our previous business. We were looking for a need that required a high level of customer service. We found it in the special event business. A referral source for rental glassware became available to us. We opened with 400 wine glasses. Quickly we discovered two things. We had a passion for the special event business and its requirements for getting things done right the first time, every time. And we needed to expand our inventory. Our first wedding was done with 3 hours’ notice. We were referred by our competition who could not handle the problems presented by this order. Since then, we have continued to be the go-to event rental company for those tough situations that need to be made right. We have also, developed systems to ensure events are easy, beautiful, and everything the client wants. Our product selection is among the best in the state. Our linen selection offers more than 400 fabrics in up to 15 sizes of each. We have 25 China patterns and 10 flatware patterns. We offer everything the caterer needs to provide outstanding food. Lastly, we offer tents and lounge furniture. Allwell Rents is the go-to for the most decerning professionals in the event industry, whether they are weddings, mitzvas, or business events.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road has not been smooth. We started in 2004. By 2008 we had 9 catering clients either renting from Allwell Rents or referring to Allwell Rents. We had just grown our inventory severalfold. 2008 was the year of the subprime bubble burst. The economy went into a tailspin. Worse than that, commercial events were demonized in the press. Where it had been good business, good fundraising, and socially important to have extravagant events, it suddenly became viewed as wasteful and a sign of poor financial management. Commercial events disappeared completely. Social events were scaled back dramatically. Five of our nine caterers closed their doors forever. Allwell Rents focused on the events. The events needed to be successful. We made sure they were. We struggled, but our competitors could not keep up. Many of their clients moved to Allwell Rents. To this day we continue to lead the industry in great service and product selection.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I came from an engineering background. I did consulting and then moved away from that industry. I moved to marketing. I had a unique approach to marketing. I solved problems. The problems I solved were typically service issues. When we opened Allwell Rents we found an industry in need of problem-solving. Deliveries were irregular. Communication was intermittent at best. Customer needs were not being met. These were challenges that I as Allwell Rents could conquer and did. What I am known for is solving problems and making events and partnerships work better than ever before.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The next 5 – 10 years will see rentals become an ever more important part of special events. Rentals will enable events to be wonderfully different from each other by allowing venues to be shown in a new vision for each event. The types of products offered will continue to grow at an ever-faster rate. Colors, textures, lounge furniture, and more will be needed to achieve these visions. Also, and even more important, will be the changing of relationships to partnerships within the professionals of the event industry. The professionals will become even more reliant on each other to make the business of events work. These partnerships will enable more cost and labor efficiency for all. The result will be even better events and more satisfied, and demanding clients, than ever.
