Today we’d like to introduce you to Diane Pauley
Hi Diane, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I didn’t expect to find myself on this journey of entrepreneurship, but I’m happy I did. For so long, I remember trying to find a way to turn what I was passionate about into a business, and when I stopped putting so much pressure on the outcome, things finally started to fall into place. I became a life coach over a decade ago because I wanted to help people—that was the mission—and how I’d end up helping has looked different over the years. But with each iteration of my business and with each season of my life, I’ve learned lessons I carry with me as a more embodied version of myself.
Today, my business is called Gimme Sweet Words, and I am part copywriter, content strategist, and coach because wearing multiple hats has become my normal day-to-day. If I were to call myself one thing, it would probably be a storyteller. As a coach, I aim to create a safe space for my clients to feel comfortable enough to share who they are with me, and it’s during these conversations that we get to the root of their story. Eventually, we put that story into words that will resonate with their ideal audience, fostering connection and sparking conversations with people who need to hear what they have to say. But the most transformative piece of all of this is often seeing their own response to the words on the page because, most times, we don’t know how the world views us, and when someone can see us and capture us for who we really are, it means everything. That’s how I’m helping today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Entrepreneurship, just like life, is never a smooth journey. Rather, it’s filled with lots of ups and downs, but that’s how we learn—by going through it. If things came easy, we wouldn’t have any lessons to share, and I’ve accumulated a lot of life lessons over the years. To me, being a business owner is one of the best personal development journeys you can go on because it tests you in unexpected ways and shows you how strong and resilient you are for choosing this path. Most business owners I meet have created something incredible from nothing because they needed to become the person and carve out the path they once needed themselves—now they get to be that person for others.
Over the years, I’ve openly, honestly, and authentically shared the lessons I learned with others as a way to be of service. I learned as I went, and I shared the imperfect journey as it came together because I often ended up discovering the message I wanted to share by sifting through the messiness of life. I started my journey as a life coach and organically morphed into a copywriter seemingly overnight. Then I reached a point where I questioned my worthiness (hello, imposter syndrome!) and decided to burn it all down and find a job. But what’s meant for you will find you, so as I worked my way up in different nonprofits, I would always find myself working in communications. Before launching Gimme Sweet Words, I was working in-house doing content marketing. The point being, life is full of pivots and detours that you may need to go on to learn a lesson, but ultimately, with time, you will find a way to come home to yourself, your calling, and what you’re meant to do.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
One of the things that I’m most proud of in the work that I do is that it’s an extension of who I am and a creative way to express what I want to say to the world—in words. I see what I do today, as a coach and writer, as creating safe spaces for women to feel seen, heard, and validated for who they are.
I work with a lot of women in business, and like myself, I find that most times, our biggest struggle is recognizing who we are, what we’re capable of, and how worthy our work is in the world. I see what I do as holding up a mirror to show others who they are for maybe the first time because sometimes you need an outside perspective to tell you the truth when you’re so close to the work that you do. That’s when the magic happens—that’s when we tap into the transformation and get to the heart of the story they’ve been yearning to tell but haven’t been able to find the words to express it.
As for what I hope to be known for one day, it’s important to me that, as individuals, we can come to understand that we truly matter and that we don’t have to pretend to be something else to be accepted or prove our worthiness to be loved—that we come to know that who we are at our core has always been and always will be enough. It’s a message I needed to hear, and I believe others do as well. The reason I write and the reason I share is because I know the power that words have.
Words are powerful—they have the ability to persuade, paint pictures, woo, affirm, heal, and connect us if we allow them to. Gimme Sweet Words is a summation of all of this and is founded on the belief that good words matter and the way we choose to communicate counts more than we know.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t know if I’d call it luck, but I think opportunities have come my way, or things have seemingly worked out over the years because of the seeds I’ve planted and nurtured along the way. Creating connections and building relationships over the last several years has contributed to the business that I have today. I wouldn’t be where I am without the people I’ve met along this journey.
They remind me why I do this work and they’ve witnessed all forms of who I am and celebrate me all the same. This tribe of incredible individuals is my source of luck, if we want to call it that, because we cannot do this work alone but in community and partnership. When we share our lives, our work, and our knowledge openly with others, we connect in a deeper way, which goes a long way.
Conversations I’ve had have turned into collaborations and partnerships. Sharing resources with others has led to connections I wouldn’t have found on my own. I believe that consistency and sustainability in business are built on a foundation of trust, which is earned over time. Laying the groundwork for connections to happen, nurturing your community when you have them, and continuing to pour into the relationships you have is how things happen. I like to think that the good I put into the world will one day find its way back to me, and it already has time and time again.
