Conversations with Ella Khalil

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ella Khalil

Hi Ella, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began in the Middle East, where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education. From 1999 to 2006, I had the privilege of teaching high school students in Iraq, but due to the escalating dangers, I could no longer continue in my field. In 2006, my family and I decided to seek a safer environment and moved to Lebanon, where we applied for visas through the United Nations to begin a new chapter in the United States.

While living in Lebanon, I was involved in working with various children’s organizations. This experience allowed me to gain additional education and certification to work with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Through IOM, I helped immigrants and refugees navigate their new lives. I also took on the responsibility of overseeing the eastern district of Lebanon, where I was able to help establish an activity center for immigrants and refugees of all ages. I was honored to serve as the director of that center, an experience that left a lasting impact on me and solidified my passion for working with children and families.

As I worked with organizations like the Norwegian Refugee Council and International Relief and Development, I realized that my true calling was to create a facility of my own, a place that would make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families. However, I knew that living in Lebanon was only temporary. I was certain that we were headed to the United States, where I could further pursue my dream. We ended up coming here in 2010, and I opened my business early 2024. It still took me a while, but I finally achieved what I’ve always dreamt of.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road hasn’t been smooth by any means, but each challenge has played a crucial role in shaping my journey. After the struggles I faced in the Middle East, I thought the transition to the U.S. would be easier, but I quickly realized that starting over in a new country came with its own set of obstacles.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was finding the perfect location for my daycare. It took longer than expected to find the right space that would suit my vision for the center. Additionally, I needed to have my Bachelor’s degree from Iraq recognized and equated to meet the requirements for opening and operating a daycare in the U.S. This process was time-consuming and required a lot of time.

Even though these obstacles were difficult at the time, they made me more determined.I’ve learned that overcoming challenges is part of the journey but they were crucial in preparing me for what I’ve achieved. I’m proud to have turned those struggles into opportunities for growth and learning.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Mama Bear Children’s Center, we specialize in providing nurturing and high quality care for children ages 6 weeks to 6 years. The name “Mama Bear” was actually inspired by my kids, who had me saved as “Mama Bear” in their contacts for years, and it perfectly embodies the loving, protective, and supportive environment we strive to create here.

In just one year since opening, I am incredibly proud of how far we’ve come. From the first day, we’ve focused on creating a space where every child feels safe, loved, and encouraged to grow. I remember starting off with just 3 kids, and now we are at 60+. We’re very close to reaching our maximum capacity of 93. Our center has seven classrooms, each designed to foster learning and development in a warm and engaging environment.

What sets us apart from other childcare facilities is the strong sense of family we nurture, not just among the children, but with the parents and our dedicated team. I couldn’t be prouder of the amazing staff that makes everything we do possible. Their passion for early childhood education and commitment to the children’s well being are the heart of our center.

One of the things I am most proud of is seeing the growth in both the children and our team in just one year. It’s been a journey, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these young children and their families.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has certainly played a role in my journey, both in terms of good and challenging experiences. When I first decided to open Mama Bear Children’s Center, I had a strong vision, but there were so many unknowns. Looking back, I’m incredibly fortunate to have found such a dedicated and passionate team from the very beginning. Their commitment to the children and to the values I wanted to instill in the center has been a huge factor in our success. That, I would consider good luck.

However, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. There were definitely moments where obstacles felt like bad luck, whether it was navigating the unexpected challenges of opening a new business or facing hurdles with regulations and growth. But even those tough moments have shaped who I am today. They’ve taught me to never lose sight of my ultimate goal, which is providing a safe, loving, and educational space for children.

So while luck has played a role, I also believe that perseverance, passion, and the incredible support from my team have been the driving forces behind our success. Every challenge we’ve faced has ultimately led to growth, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the lessons along the way.
