Conversations with Evan Schmidt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Schmidt

Evan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
EDITH is a Denver Emo/Punk band that began about 2 years ago. What started as just four guys writing songs in a basement to blow off steam has evolved into a band of 6 people with a team behind us. 2024 was our first full year out in the wild as a band and we accomplished releasing our first EP and several singles, going out on our first tour and headlining several Denver events. We are looking to continue building steam in the coming year and beyond.

Our musical style includes influences from Midwest Emo, Post-hardcore, Pop Punk and Indie Rock. Fans of Brand New, Title Fight and American Football will be right at home. Vocally, the band offers lead parts form multiple singers juxtaposed in tone and intensity which result in dense stacks. Lyrically, the band balances internal poetic catharsis with external events to bring to life the raw emotions so many can relate to. EDITH is Evan Schmidt, Gunther Hochholdinger, Tyler Berrett, Ricky Weathers, Brian Crowley and Ed Polanco.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to starting and maintaining a band is never smooth, at least I have yet to hear that story. The challenges and adversity are part of the charm to us though. We all come from musical backgrounds and have been playing in projects our whole lives. We understand that the grind almost always outweighs the moments of “success” and levity. This means that to be in EDITH, you must be in love with the process, not the desired result that we are after. It’s interesting to all be after the common goal of making music as a career but also have a pre-requisite of tempered expectations.

We have been SO lucky in EDITH to have broken through to a fanbase and have an active role in our scene. I know that the 6 of us all have true passion for music and would be going to shows 3-4 times a week whether we were in a band or not. This is really a lifestyle for us and we are fully committed. Almost all other aspects of my life are tied to the Denver Music Scene.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Our songs are often morbid poems that fit poppy, yet daring song structures. It has been very important to find a balance in originality as well as pop-sensibility. I feel like these two elements are the “magic-sauce” of the band as well as a mission statement of sorts. We don’t ever want to just make music that sounds like it’s already been made. We all agree there is no point in that to us. However, a lot of us come from music theory, theater and choir backgrounds, so we are intrinsically pleased by good arrangements. Finding a balance here is key to our material.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
A lot of luck! Most of our “success” has been due to being put on shows with other excellent bands or going to lots of shows and talking to people. Networking has been a big part of our story and community involvement is always going to be at the forefront.
